I know Morgan has not played red ball cricket but could he do something similar to Brearley (sp?) did in the 80's/90's to get the best out of the current players? I do not believe Root knows how to motivate players or how to leverage the resources available to him. Perfect example is the way he is over bowling Archer and under bowling Woakes.

Edit: Also, added Anderson but that is a long tail for England.

Yep, he has been outstanding so far. It's going to an interesting dilemma for Aussie selection on who to leave out for the next test, with Smith most likely to come in.

6 I think deserve their places the other 5 not sure at all. My personal view is that Bairstow is not the best keeper and his batting in test cricket is down year on year. Butler just isn�t a red ball player, neither is Roy. Yes butler had a decent series a while back but has a very average red ball batting average and hardly plays red ball ever prior to his test appearances. Denly has faired ok without a big score behind him but seems to look better than most but possibly is out of his depth having played most of his very long and decent red ball career in Div 2.

Surely we do not have to have our ODI side as our test side!!!!

Agree with your 6, I'd like us to revert back to more specialists and having too many players who bat at 5 is no good.

So...adding to your 6 I'm putting Ollie Pope in at 5 for the near future and potentially long term.And the best keeper in the Country Ben Foakes who would bat 7 the traditional keeper position. I've got Chris Woakes batting 8.

That leaves a combined PPCC/Soulman 11 missing numbers 2 and 3- the most crucial positions.

If Root continued to bat 3 I'd have Pope at 4....but he's going to go back to number 4 isn't he?

So still need 2 and 3....is one of bairstow or butler good enough to bat there? No....I don't think so

That leaves 2 specialist batsmen needed

At 3 I'm going for Malan, experience and guts is what is needed

My side leaves us lacking a number 2 with no bairstow or butler...that is the problem.

Morgan�s talking about maybe having to give up the odi stuff because of his back issues, and we�ve got people wanting him in the test side(your not the only one who�s mentioned it).

I really doubt Morgan will ever happen.

We gonna Lose this. Might as well through lot out.

Sibley, and pope in why not foakes.

Do we have enough back up to drop buttler and bairstow? Do we want to change the lot?

Buttler was the highest England red ball scorer last summer(not just a series) and bairstow was pretty epic a few years back........ but pick whichever one you think is in better form and go with that.

@ppccopener yes I agree with the Foakes inclusion 100% I left all the * as TBC

I would add Malan at 3 or if they see something in Denly I�m happy for him to bat 3 and have the rest of the series.

Pope at 5 works for me as arguably the best young bat in the championship. Ballance has scored bucket loads but there was a great piece from Mark Waugh and Ricky ponting before the start of play about how to play the moving ball and they said about getting to the ball and playing the leave as a positive shot. Ballance always has and from the highlights Iv seen plays from the crease and is a back foot player predominantly which for some reason most of England�s players are. In addition he has had 2/3 chances and after a great start never settled at test level.

As for the opener it has to be Sibley as there must be merit in the county championship and picking on form and he is the opener in form this year and has been since his move to Birmingham.

Finally I�m not totally bothered if they leave the squad for the remaining series and stick with those they picked as long as they learn. Australia prepared for the ashes test last time 9 months in advance, resting the quicks purely for test cricket. I think England have lost there way in picking the same squads for ODI and test cricket and it�s just not the same game. Not against the best in the world

What ever happened to Hameed? I thought he showed some promise.

Root's knackered. I don't think it's got anything to do with batting at three, he's been in so many times before 20 overs are bowled in the past three years. He's not thinking clearly, his poor management of Archer shows that and he's dropping catches...

Hopefully we can stop this, he opens in odis so must be able to in tests. As oer the George Dobell article. Roy is not a test opener. Warner and Sehwag can leave and play with soft hands. Roy cannot.

Ashes are as good as gone, I'd go with...

If they deem Archer needs a rest, see where Anderson is at. Stokes is high at four, but is in form with the bat and allows Pope to bed in in a familiar position. Bairstow is needed to focus on batting and bring in Foakes with a point to prove. Buttler gone as one hundred in 33 tests for an impact batsmen isnt, for me, quite enough. Time for specialist players in specialist roles.

Is this opinion formed from your extensive time spent within the England camp?

No international player should need motivating to bat long or bowl well. As for Woakes, he's been off in this test in my opinion, bowling too short and loose. So not why would you bowl him longer?

Stokes bowled 15 straight yesterday, so I'm sure Archer can handle the spells he's had. Not sure his cramp can be put onto Root over bowling him tbf. Although as with anyone he needs to be used sensibly, but I'm sure he'd advise his captain if he felt he couldn't bowl the spells he's bowling.

The batting was always going to let us down and it has.
