I have been perplexed that Starc hasn't had a run out yet.  Of all the Aussie bowlers he is the one I think we would least like to face

I may be thinking too much about nothing here, but...

Australia are playing against Derbyshire  in a 3 day game that started today. The Aussies have an interesting looking side.
Steve Smith is back. Paine is not playing with Carey keeping wicket and Khawaja as skipper.

They may just be giving everyone a game so nobody would go into a Test "cold" if called upon, but can we read anything into the possible Australia side for Old Trafford from this?

Cameron Bancroft
Marcus Harris
Steven Smith
Usman Khawaja(c)
Marnus Labuschagne
Matthew Wade
Alex Carey(wk)
Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Starc
Peter Siddle
Michael Neser

Not really; the only two certs in that side for next week are Smith and Labuschagne

Khawaja, was the only senior player left other than Wade/Marsh who could have captained the Derbyshire game.  Pulling information out of thin air but Paine will still be the captain for the rest of the series, Starc might come in for Pattinson and they might drop Wade/Head for Marnus and it's most likely going to be Wade since as of right now Head is the VC and consistent.  Wade has scored 160 runs in the series so far with majority of those runs from the 2nd inning century in the first test.  Now if Wade was keeping instead of Carey that would be interesting for Paine.

I think the Aus team will be: Warner, Khawaja, Marnus, Smith, Head, Wade, Paine, Cummings, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood

...Alex Carey(wk)

This guy is Test material! Why not play him as a batsman.

Alex Carey is gun, what a player. Such a shame both England and Australia have a few fringe 1XI wk / batsmen

Kind of surprised that Khawaja opened but it could be the indication on how Aus is likely to go in the next test.

About the only thing you can take from it is that Head is safe which probably isn't a surprise, could be a shootout between Harris/Khawaja/Wade for two spots.

Anderson out for the series. https://www.ecb.co.uk/england/men/news/1329324/england-name-squad-for-fourth-specsavers-ashes-test

How Roy is in the side is still beyond me...

Overton's back! Didn't see that coming, although I suppose we should have done - classic England reaction to a batting failure: more seamers!

Yes, that was a shock - he barely makes Somersets first choice side when everyone is fit, and has done lots of nothing much this year. The likes of Jamie Porter, Ben Coad etc must be seething...

He most definately does make Somerset first team, and has probably featured in every game. You're very wrong there I'm afraid.

Not bad on paper, but playing primarily on the ridiculously bowler friendly pitches at Taunton (which accounts for most of the average difference in my opinion), its worth saying that that places him fourth in Somerset's averages (fifth if you allow Van Der Merwe) - behind his own, much quicker, brother.  Porter and Coad have more wickets, and have done so over the past few years consistently - as has Ollie Robinson, who appeared to be next cab when given the new cherry for the Lions.  No offence, but it seems an odd selection to me.
