I heard this morning that England have named the same squad, but Stokes may play as a specialist batsman due to shoulder pain.
Who's going to bowl first change then? Overton and who? I suppose Root isn't doing much with the bat so he may as well try and bowl himself into form! Seems like a strange plan, I'd hate to see Broad injured due to a high workload after carrying the team all 'summer'.
Although not setting the world on fire Denly has showed a bit of patience and grit which is sadly missing from most test batsmen these days, too many batsmen forget that the game lasts for 5 days ....if it's not raining.

With the Oval test being the last test for Bayliss, who are the leading candidate for replacement?  It seems to be pretty quiet on that front considering NZ tour in October and SA tour in Dec.

Indeed. In fact why listen to ex pros who've played at the highest level at all, when you can get all the nonsense you need from club players right here, a lot of whom struggle to average double digits with the bat ;)

Ollie pope got a lovely fifty today on a track everyone else was 185 for 15.........

His first class average is 61. Only 12 people in the history of first class cricket have ever scored 2000 runs at a higher avaerage than him.

Such a shame for pope, he happens to exist in an era where England have such and awesome batting line up............

Watched that 50. It had the same aura as every Bairstow innings from 14-16, that weird sense that one guy had brought his own private pitch.

This lad needs to come in, along with a specialist opener. The only way I can see it happening is if one is chosen from bairstow and butler, and one of Denly or Roy because they basically do the same job and I'm not sure how much longer we can carry on being unbalanced.

I'm a bit retro, back to more specialists which means Foakes plays ahead of bairstow and butler....but I don't see England picking him or making wholesale changes.

Don't know whether Roy deserves more time now at number 4. Of the above presuming Foakes remains out in the cold I would pick(from my armchair  :))

Butler...seems to be able to think about the match situation a bit more

Denly....don't care how old he is

You would then leave places available where we are in most need, number 2 number 5.

At some point or other we have to strengthen the batting and can't see any other way of doing it.

but whats the batting lineup going to be?

burns
denly
root
stokes
bairstow
buttler
curran
woakes
archer
leach
broad

to say our batting is the weak suit thats a  long tail and lot of pressure on a fragile top 4 and then the two all rounders

unless curran bats higher

Odd decision by the Aussies to axe Head tbh. He’s 25 and one of their VCs. Wade fortunate

James Vince is currently 54* off 39 balls against Surrey.

Anyone else got a feeling he may end up on a tour this winter? :-[

Is there any reason for such a long winter tour in terms of tests? 2 in NZ, 4 in SA, 2 in SL.

Also going I was probably harsh on Burns and Denly the last time, but I'm not sure about the latter being a long term solution at 3; then again, I'm not sure there's anyone out there who can fill the role like the players of old...
