New GN helmet - integrated neck guard
« on: August 15, 2019, 02:42:00 PM »

I was wondering how long it would take to see helmets with an integrated neck guard and it looks like GN are the first to do it. Can't say I'm a big fan but to be fair have never really liked the styling of their helmets in general.

Nice.  I would like to see a horizontal bar going across the bottom half between the two ends.  The gap looks large enough for a ball to go through.

GM aren’t the first.

It is strange to see as amarican football and baseball helmets have most protection around necks and face is almost secondary. OK, cricket is a sideways game as Fred Truman used to say but so is baseball I guess!

I think this looks terrible personally but good on them for innovating.
Will hopefully see some more elegant solutions in the near future

Not my cup of tea from a looks point of view, but as mentioned good on them. if I played a better standard than I do, and played on quicker wickets I would definitely go down this road! For now my stinky old 2005 Wicket Keeping Masuri will have to do!

Im sure manufacturers in time will come up with an integral guard that looks the part!

Kind Regards,

Mikey.

The BSI safety test stipulates that after an impact no part of the grille can come into contact with the face head or neck.

As things stand I don't think that the neckguards in their various guises are part of the test (@Ayrtek Cricket can you clarify?) but there are 2 considerations here:

1. The product description says it has passed the safety standard, but it is very easy to make a case to say that this integrated neck guard is actually part of the grille. As an impact would clearly cause the grille to impact the back of the neck in a Hughes/Smith style impact, this to me cannot pass the safety standard unless of course the product development has outpaced the testing factors. I believe the impact is tested front on, presumably there is nothing in the test about impacting the grille from the rear...

2. As and when the safety standard is updated to take neckguards into consideration (presumably only fixed ones) then I suspect the requirement will be for a soft or impact absorbing style material. A metal cage being pressed into the back of the neck close to key circulatory infrastructure is pretty dangerous in my opinion.

We’ve been working as a committee on the integration of a test standard for the neck guard into the BSI so that they have to meet a minimum safety criteria.

Love the innovation, it might be far from perfect but any step in the right direction is a good one.

Slightly off topic but whilst I think the idea of the stem guard style system is the right way to go, I think the pricing is a real issue, a senior stem guard in Australia comes at a RRP of $89 on top of the $150-$300 that you've already laid down for the helmet, a piece of equipment that, if you follow the manufacturers, should be replaced after one impact, which most people would experience atleast once a season, safety is important, but it's at a point where is just isn't practical for alot of people to buy these things.

I'm not sure the stemguard needs to replaced after every impact? It certainly never used to indicate this on the packaging.

Sorry for the confusion, but I was referring to the helmet itself.

I had to think about this neck guard a bit. I feel that in case of a hard hit, the curved steel could pinch down on the neck causing a contusion. There needs to be a foam/rubber/pvc insert between the steel and the the skin.

Why not borrow/plagiarize designs from baseball helmets? Americans sports use good/safe helmets and they are cheap too.

I was contacted by a company looking to design a new baseball helmet previously so hopefully it shows I’m doing something right.
