Why Do Pros Use Remfrys?
« on: September 19, 2019, 02:54:15 AM »

Pretty much every pro's net session that I see on youtube has them wearing Remfrys thigh pads. I use Aero P1s when I need a thigh pad but have never used a Remfry. What's so special about them that pros prefer Remfrys over any other brand?

I think the consensus is that Strettons are thinner and finished better maybe?

Strettons are by far better quality in every way IMO. I guess the difference between the two is availability as much as anything, particularly globally

I've been after some custom Strettons for ages but not made any progress

I lucked out on mine after contacting George about the infamous forum toe protectors and I will never need another set of thigh pads

I've not tried remfry it was a toss up between them and a set of Strettons, ended up with the Strettons I definitely don't feel the need to try anything else the level of protection is unreal.

Was going to get some Strettons but thought I'd wait to see if George gets any further along with the new ultra thin design before going ahead.

Ressurecting an old thread, but have an answer for the OP, after hearing this story discussed during radio commentary at the recent Adelaide test.  It's an interesting story, so to paraphrase a few articles and interviews.......

In 1985 Steve Remfry saw Sunil Gavaskar batting with a shabby ill fitting arm guard.  Remfry had a full time job as an orthotist at the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital, and knew how to make quality equipment that would give unrivaled protection, comfort, and have a long lifetime.  Thinking he could make Sunny an arm guard that was much better, he whipped one up during his lunchbreak, and took it down to the nets for Sunny to try.  Next innings Gavaskar used the new guard and made 166 not out.  His young team mate Mohammad Azharuddin was impressed, and asked Remfry if he could make him a thigh pad out of the same material.  Word soon spread, and since then the Adelaide test was a busy time for Remfry, as international cricketers from many nations visited his tiny workshop to be measured up for custom fitted protective gear, which he would make overnight in his small garden shed, and drop off to the oval the next day.  Even Virat and Yuvraj Singh dropped by one day to be kitted out by Steve.

Because of time limitations his gear was only available in limited numbers to the pros, until recently.  Before Steve died in 2016, he made sure he passed his knowledge to his son Luke, who carries on the tradition.

Pro use remfry because they offer top quality protection.

I have had mine around 10-12 years tried strettons and didn't like them to be be honest plus I had got used to my remdogs.

Related question: For same size, which is lighter among Remfry, Strettons and Aero P1s
