RS custom butterfly
« on: November 20, 2019, 01:46:15 PM »

Going by the forum custom of not being able to resist bat purchases and after some strong word of mouth, i decided to get in touch with RS sports in india to get the cheapest english willow offering they have. I just gave them a couple of non-negotiable terms. Keep it under 1200g without too much concaving, chunky toe, and oval handle. What followed was a pleasant surprise as they gave me a complete bespoke experience by having me choose my own cleft, providing me regular updates throughout and getting my requirement down to the "T". What i have here is a beautiful bat with the following specs.

38mm edge (rounded)
65mm spine (slightly rounded face)
15mm shoulders (also rounded)
25mm on the edge of the toe
29mm on the center of the toe
108mm width
540mm blade
310mm handle (medium thickness and oval)
Zero concaving whatsoever
Dead on 42oz i.e. 2lb10oz
Mid/low sweetspot

Overall press is medium soft and it is slightly harder near the butterfly stain. Ping is really really good all over. Cost was AED 425 out of which about 125 were shipping and customs charges to the UAE. Total would be about GBP 90.

And here we go...

Will try and post a video review soon

I know that these butterfly bats aren't to everyone's taste, but that looks absolutely gorgeous!

I'm assuming that's had some oil applied to bring the colours out the way they are?

What has actually happened to the willow for that sort of pattern to appear on a bat? Obviously something went on inside the tree, but I’ve no idea what that could be.

And the rest he would grade it as a G1 butterfly but don’t question him on his morals or thoughts on other brands or Asian brands that produce inferior products

Butterfly Stain

This is “Butterfly Stain”

So called as it resembles the wings and body of a butterfly. It is attributed to pruning and frost damage, especially by hard pruning of larger branches that causes scarring in the timber. (Found in our own research and confirmed by the Forestry Commission). Although most people do not understand the butterfly stain, it adds strength to the finished bat, giving longer life of the bat with much less likely hood of the bats breaking.

This is a worse form of butterfly stain, commonly named “Bar Stain” or “Tiger Stain”. It is formed the same way as butterfly stain, but there is so much stain it adds weight to the blade as well. The stains are close together and there will be many of them over the blade.

That would be my phone camera over-saturating the colors under slightly low light. It is not as dark as it looks in the pictures. I have only applied 1 light coat of oil so far

This is perhaps a more accurate representation of the color of the wood. This was sent to me by RS before they stickered it.

It would also be a 2.10 "feel" rather than the conventional measure of a 2.10 weight

Nice review mate. What caught my eye was the handle thickness line in the review

"310mm handle (medium thickness and oval)"

Wish this was a standard way to specify bat handle thickness in bat descriptions so we know what we are getting when buying online.
