Current World XI
« on: December 04, 2019, 02:39:20 PM »

Following the discussion over who would make a combined NZ/England XI, ive been thinking who would make a world XI?

1
2
3 Williamson *
4 Kohli
5 Smith
6 Stokes
7 Watling +
8
9 Cummins
10
11 Anderson

Made up of a traditional set up (not packed with all rounders) players to be picked can move one place away from where they would appear for there nations (allowing to pick more of the better players)

Id say the above would walk into a current world XI the others not so sure, i would have picked shakib as my spinner but he's currently banned

Should add this is for tests and to be played on a standard ground no need for two spinners etc

Depends if you are going solely on position, or if you are able to flex who bats where...

Warner
Latham
Williamson
Kohli
Nicholas
Stokes
Pant
Holder
Yadav
Ashwin
Bumrah

According to Howstat based on performance

Min 1 Inn in last year
Min 20 inns in relevant position
Min 1 match in last year
Min 40 wickets/dismissals
One spin and 3 pace bowling.

I've allowed one position movement as it seems daft that Smith Kohli and Williamson wouldn't be on the side

Excluded Warner as he was properly garbage in the ashes like really garbage

Latham isn't a bad shout

I always find picking a World XI very interesting because it hugely depends on where it is where it is being played, it is ok saying 'a standard ground' but Warner has just averaged under 10 in the Ashes and then averaged 489 at home against Pakistan. Similarly Archer looked a shadow of himself on a flat NZ pitch etc....

So does Warner get in? his Ashes form says no but his current form says yes?

I think there are a few obvious certainties - Smith, Kohli etc.... after that it is very subjective.... but that is the fun!

I would go with the following -

1. Latham
2. Warner
3. Williamson *
4. Kohli
5. Smith
6. Stokes
7. Watling +
8. Ashwin
9. Cummins
10. Wagner
11. Bumrah

Unlucky to miss out - Labuschagne, Rahane, Agarwal, Lyon, Hazelwood, Holder, Shami

I would argue this is a pretty strong IX tail maybe a little long but a hell of a lot above them with the bat

Elgar
Warner
Williamson
Kohli
Smith
Stokes
Holder
Foakes (arguably the best keeper in the world based just on keeping)
Cummins
Lyon
Bumrah

I reckon there are fewer genuine contenders now than there were a year or two back, so its a more nuanced selection.  Nailed on certs?  Well, I doubt anyone would argue against Williamson, Kohli, Stokes and Cummins, and there wouldn't be many opposing Watling right now.  Smith is also a near cert if you are prepared to overlook the cheating, shameless sooking and general disregard for the spirit of the game.  Meanwhile, there is no stand out spinner, nor are there any really strong contenders for the openers berths - indeed, I debated starting my line up with two of Pujara, Williamson and Labuschange on the basis that the OP's allowed one place either way.  That would allow:

Pujara
Williamson
Kohli
Smith (or Labuschagne)
Root
Stokes
Watling
Cummins
Rabada
Harmer
Boult/Bumrah

But eventually, my selection (with Smith omitted on moral grounds - or lack of morals grounds):

Edgar
Pujara
Williamson*
Kohli
Root
Stokes
Watling
Cummins
Rabada
Harmer
Boult or Bumrah

Labuschagne to open, and Smith to go 4. Sorry Sir Alistair.

Based on the current rankings

Warner
Pujara (because of the dearth of opening batsmen)
Williamson
Kholi
Smith
Stokes
Watling
Jadaja
Holder
Cummins
Rabada

Stokes probably lucky to be in the team...
