Neon Blue - repair and colour change
« on: February 29, 2020, 03:31:58 PM »

Hi all

As I know a few of you are fans of these ongoing repair threads I thought you'd like to see the latest project I have on the go.

This is one of my old bats which ended up with a teammate. He had a Kookaburra Ghost Pro that suffered a broken handle during our winter nets last season. This went off to the forums very own Northern Monkey for a new handle, but he needed a bat in the meantime. Being the nice bloke I am I lent him one of mine.

A seasons use and 517 runs later he'd grown quite attached to it, so I let him buy it. At nets last night it suffered a break to the toe. As part of the sale I agreed to do a refurb for him anyway, so there's a free repair for him now!

As an aside as he liked this bat so much, he recently brought himself a Neon Pro Players with white stickers. He would like this to match his new stick following the refurb, so bought a set of white Neon stickers ahead of time so these are ready to be applied.

The first thing I did was remove the sticker from the front, then give the face and edges a rough sand to remove the scuff sheet and sticker residue. This gave me a smooth area to work with flowing the removal of the scuff sheet and made it easier to see what I was doing with the glue.

The main area I needed to address was obviously the split that went up the face from the toe. I opened this up to see how far the damage extended.

Once the damaged area was open I got plenty of high quality PVA glue in there. As you can see from this picture there are a few cracks on the face which may be delamination. I'll address this later.

Once I was satisfied there was plenty of glue in the damaged area, I used some cheap fibreglass tape to pull the wood into the correct place and hold it there while the glue dries.

This may be a rather crude way of "clamping" the willow it is a method I've had success with in the past. This is also absolutely terrible tape, that tore or split on impact with a cricket ball. As such I won't be using it on any bats so this seemed a good use for it!

I will now leave the glue to dry overnight, and if we have a dry day tomorrow I should hopefully be able to get the refurb finished.

Watch this thread for updates  :)

I use one of these little shrink wrap rollers. Works wonders for wrapping glued repairs up tight and then easily peels off when dry

Just a quick one and I'm officially done with this for the day.

As the glue was a fast cure it's "mostly" set to the extent I was able to examine the damage to the face that I hadn't mummified. This appeared to be surface cracks rather than delamination. I therefore used everyone's favourite liquid superglue to seal these cracks. I went fairly heavy handed with this as I know there's plenty of sanding to be done still. Being the liquid variety this liberal application will allow for the glue to soak right into the cracks and totally seal them.

Once everything has dried and set tomorrow I'll remove the tape and give the face another rough sand to clean up the excess glue. If all goes to plan I'll then be able to finish the refurb and get the bat back to he owner for our net session on Wednesday

Makes a case for linseed oil being used a bit more liberally?

We're not allowed to speculate about who makes bats for who. Apart from when we are.

Cue 'jokes' about Hunting around and finding out they are indeed made in a County in the UK...

I'm not sure it would have made a lot of difference really.
The bat was oiled twice before being knocked in, then had a scuff sheet applied.

The biggest issue I feel is the cheap balls that have been used. No amount of oil or knocking in can save a bat from those!

For those sort of glueing jobs, I've been using ordinary duct tape, except I put it on sticky side up.  You can wrap any cracks extremely tightly, and it holds well without leaving any residue on the bat.
The same trick would work for that fibreglass tape - less gunk to clean off.

Well I've got through a few sanding disks...

I've taken the tape off the toe, sealed the rest of the surface cracks and worked through the grades of sandpaper up to 320.

Now I just need to apply the stickers, oil it and put a new scuff sheet on.
