What would you do?
« on: March 05, 2020, 09:41:59 AM »

Imagine the scenario... it's a week before the season starts, and dirty tea leaves/aliens/Ricky Ponting have been round and nicked ALL your cricket bats. Panic!

So, you need a bat in a hurry. You're a CBF member, so be honest - you really need two bats. You've got to be able to get hold of them and get them ready to play by Saturday, and they've got to be new because the pesky thief has been round the rest of your mates' houses too. What do you buy? If it's different from what you usually use, why is that?

So you are asking which three bats we would buy and why?

I'll have a think and let you know which four it would be.

Agree with Dorset that I'd have a Chase, assuming I don't have the time to go get one made it'd be a Volante - match ready(ish), decent enough shape and one of only about 3 companies that put a handle I find acceptable in stock bats.

Probably a GM Siren as backup because it's got a low middle, proper handle and I could just go use it.

Why don't I use those normally? My newest bat is a Chase cleft so I sort of do.

It would have to be a B3 as they are the most "Match Ready" bats i've ever had in terms of performance and prep.

As it is the forum I can only assume all my other kit has gone missing too, so I need to replace that as well? "no just the bat has gone missing." Well I best get new kit anyway...  :)

Think I'd get a Pro grade GM, not an off the shelf one. Because their pressing is spot on I. E. Ready to use.

And then I'd get a Neon players grade to knock in.

I'd go with two Gray Nicolls bats if I'm honest, Melbourne factory is relatively close and I wouldn't be complaining about picking up a new Delta Inception or three. Love the fuller shape and cannot go wrong with the stickers!

A whole week is a lot of time to choose a new kit, even better if you insurance company is paying for it...!

If the insurance is paying you'll have a lot more than a week to choose it..!

I'd love a Hunts made bat actually, best handles out there. BUT they take so long to knock in it's ridiculous, don't think I'd get it done in a week.

My first purchase would be a GM Noir 404. This is a nice shape and they come with GM Now meaning this one could be used and abused straight away. I'm not counting this as one of the two though, as it would be the emergency "ready to play" bat!

That obviously wouldn't have bright enough stickers though would it...

I'd also get a Neon pink in performance grade. This would be knocked in and would replace the GM as soon as it was ready to use.

I couldn't have a top end bat stolen and replace it with a low end one though, could I? I'd have to replace my Neon Pink Pro with another Neon Pink Pro.

Once the first Neon was knocked in and in my bag, the GM would have to go off for a refurb and some pink stickers too, just so it matched the others... :D

Probably a GM 606 and/or a JEDI as James has now got a funky knocking in machine!

A call out to the CBF'ers would work.

How many members have a trove of extra, spare, wet weather, net, just knocking in, couldn't resist in the sale, I'm sure a teammate would like this, haven't tried that make/profile/grade before or I just like willow bats hidden away from their partners bats they could let go for a price that suits both?

There is an argument that this is not a buying/selling forum and you're not buying directly from a sponsor or directly from the retailer. But in my opinion it's all part of the circle of bat ownership and creates a void that will be filled sooner or later.

Probably have a hunt through the Crossbat cricket sale or the IJC used section for something pre knocked in!

If I have to go new off the shelf it would have to be a shorter blade/longer handle combo, mid or high middle in 2 8 or less and UK made. GM Neon ideally if I could find one, or maybe an Eclipse from this year's range. Possibly a Chase Vortex or a Kook Ghost/Kahuna Lite or Concept 20. GN Pro Performance if I'm feeling very flush.

If I have time to go custom, a B3 harrow made with a standard mens oval handle to about 2lb 8oz. Likely finch (12.1) or root (32.2) shape depending on prevailing weather/pitch conditions!

In reality, probably one used, at least one from the off the shelf options and a B3 plus a net bat copy!

I picked up a custom shape Garrard and Flack at the start of last season which is the most 'match ready' that I have seen a bat.  I would probably need the fill week to faff around with the handle though

Easy choice: CA. I'd ask for two. Then, I'd go to town on those CA with a mallet and see which one pings better.

Red Ink and H4L
Both make great bats and it’s important to support forum sponsors.
