GM 404 Models
« on: April 08, 2020, 11:22:50 AM »

What are your thoughts regarding 404 models across all range. Just picked Noir 404. I could see 6 grains but barely visible due to bleaching. Would like to know your thoughts/experince with 404s.

I had ordered a 404 zelos from PDC an year or so ago..the bat had very nice straight grains but a pin knot in the playing area..the bat picked great and the ping was superior to a lot of 909s that passed through my hands. The bat didn't feel hard like a GM either, it was quite springy.

Yes it is blind buy. for the price i paid i cant complain about looks. it certainly has clean face with few specks. Respond with ball is good as well. It has deeper sound when ball strikes. But will need further play in that not gonna happen anytime soon. Is there anything that could be done to make grains more prominent. I have applied oil to back lets see if that makes any difference.

They can be great value. I had a Chrome 404 last year for £35 and sold on to a club friend who is very happy with it. Not pretty but it knocked up very nicely.

There's a really nice review on line by that guy who people send their bats to for prepping. I think he's in NZ and works out of a shed, but I can't find his YouTube channel right now. Anyone else got the link? He shows how to knock a 404 in properly and get it responding well. He takes off the factory scuff sheet as this stops you rounding off the edges properly

Yeah watched that one along with few other 404 reviews. I will keep the scuff on without knocking edges as edges are already rounded and it's round face aswell.  I think I have found my perfect bat Weight and handle wise. Have to finalize things after I get chance to use it

I picked up this Chrome 404 a couple of years back and it went as well as all my other GM bats at the time. You can get some stunning examples that almost don’t seem to have been bleached but on the whole looks wise I don’t think they will win many beauty competitions lol.

GM’s just need proper preparation in my opinion to really get going and that’s in all grades but once they do they are as good as anything in my opinion.

Cricketbatinfo does the best and most honest reviews of bats I've seen anywhere by miles. He's not selling them and has no reason to make outrageous claims like other people.

My son has a Zelos 404. with obvious butterfly on the back, but none on the face - guessing that the bleaching took care of that?
Grains were still visible when new, but a few coats of oil, and a colour wise year later it looks no different to any other bat.
The only issue with it, is that the butterfly made the press of the face uneven.  You can still feel 'waves' in the face, and despite thorough knocking in, there are some horizontal cracks in that area.

Ha ha. Must have been the accent that fooled me. Doesn't sound like Surrey...

Got any pictures of it?

Here goes.  You'll have to forgive the presentation, as our season has only recently finished :)
Having a closer look, the cracks on the edge are ball damage, but it did get a good knocking in.  Will give me something to do before next season.
No face sheet used, but we put tape along the edges when we noticed the first crack.

Hard to get a good shot of the un-evenness of the pressing, but you can see there are a few high spots, and it was like this from new. You can feel it as you run your fingers along the face.
I'm putting this down to the butterfly being harder, and the press rides up over those bits.  Still a nice bat and the lad loves it, but if I was looking at another bat and it had these waves in the face, I'd probably give it a miss.

Man that Chrome and zelos looks very nice for 404. Mine has no visible grain at all but can see at certain angles. Will post pics once Mrs out of door for work
