I get the impression those protocols would have been drawn up sometime ago.

As you've probably seen from Boris Johnson on LBC this morning now saying that changing rooms and teas are now an issue, I hope people are realising that its the buffon in charge of the country rather than the ECB directly and whom they're having to deal with

The thing is, any process of drawing up stages and protocols should be done openly and transparently. Clubs should have received updates about the protocols as they were being developed, and given the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions - lets not forget that recreational cricketers have day jobs, and many will know far more about this kind of thing than some professional dogsbody at the ECB. Use that expertise! I work in policy development and guidance ffs, given my personal interest in this going well, I'd have helped them out for free.

The 5-step pathway could and should have been published in March, with protocols for a range of possible scenarios for the different stages developed openly and transparently throughout April. By 1st May, they should have been with DCMS for feedback, pushing for a 1st June start date - with delay until 4th July being a worst-case scenario.

Instead, we are where we are, the day before what should have been the worst-case outcome, still having negotiations with HMG that should have been resolved 2 months ago, and with no meaningful details of protocols having reached the clubs yet.

The impression I get is that the ECB simply don't have the staff in place to plan and manage detailed and difficult projects like this. They've been late and unprepared at every step of the way, and to make it worse, they're secretive and arrogant, and in total denial that they could have done any better.

The ECB have got to take their share of the blame, it's their job to get the game on. Plenty of other sports have managed it, and others that haven't have set out their plans far better.

One thing noone's saying is it's surely all about numbers at this point - Boris waffle aside, it's still only at max groups of 6.

As a side-issue, the max groups of 6 thing is a total nonsense based on meaningless semantics. Its the worst-written guidance I've ever encountered. There is no functional limit on gatherings in pubs or shops, in parks or on beaches. The only specification is that you should "try to limit social interaction" with groups who you did not "attend with", but how enforceable is that, exactly?

The ultimate distinction is that organised gatherings are banned, but disorganised or spontaneous gatherings are fine. There is zero public health benefit to this rule. It makes no sense. Unfortunately, recreational sport is one of the few things that you couldn't really claim to be a spontaneous gathering.

In the same way that you cannot blame pubs, restaurants,  hairdressers for not opening until now, yiu cannot blame the ECB. I have former work colleagues working there. They've been near demanding Government let us play. It's the Government's decision. Going from the ball is the issue to teas and changing illustrates that. The ECB are losing cash big time. They're not looking for excuses not to play.

As it stands, accordimg to Gov logic, you can stand and have drinks in your club's licensed bar, but not eat teas in the same room. You can net outdoors, but not play. That's not on the ECB. They're not the villains here,  by any stretch. They can't usurp law and the lockdown.

Precious few sensible comments on this thread, this is one of them.

No tea and no showers, presumably some CBF members won't bother playing then ;)

They've taken away the two beat parts of the day! :(

Depends who you're playing against, I can think of a few teas I'd have happily replaced with a 4 hour old Greggs 😅

On another side note, Uri Geller has been found in Cambridgeshire. Protocols in March? I’ll have the lottery numbers please

lo and behold, the protocols are basically identical to the ones I suggested in April.

It took me 10 minutes to come up with them, it took the ECB multiple people working full time for 3 months. And we wonder why we have a productivity problem in this country.

I don't think coming up with the protocols was the issue, As you said it only took you 10 minutes - it's not a significant intellectual task. I would argue that getting the virus under control so that they could get the previously mentioned protocols signed off from the Government is what has taken the last 3 months

anyway, cricket is back!! isn't this exciting!!
