Puma fake grain sheet reveal
« on: April 24, 2020, 11:02:59 AM »

Inspired by our very own @t2ylo on twitter I splashed out in these two fake grain sheet oumas from pro direct as a little project while in lockdown and bored out of my tree. Tracking them from the U.K. to Oslo also have me a weeks entertainment  :D
This is what showed up. Two fairly big but heavily concaved bats with fake grains sheets and some white emulsion over the rest of them.

After a fair bit of work with the heat gun and some 120 on the orbital they were revealed to both be pretty heavily stained bitterly bats. One with 6 grains and one with 10.

A finer sanding showed them to have a few other stains and marks but nothing drastic.

Once polished the butterfly stains cane up nicely, for those who like them. And in the correct light the 10 grain bat has some very nice evenly spaced grains. No idea what to do with them now but it was good enough fun that I went back to order more (they were sold out).

I’d have teased it out a bit longer but posting photos on here is a ball ache, especially for a mobile. So it’s straight to the money shot 😁

I know this is probably subjective, but actual willow, no matter how "ugly" it is, always looks better than that white paint and a grain sheets in my opinion!

Good job, I also like these unmasking jobs. They don't look too bad, but you can see why they decided to cover it up. What did you pay for them?

Correct, I’ve yet to unmask one and wish I could put the sheet back on!

Can see why they covered them up, but bitterly has become a bit more acceptable recently, in some places anyway.

I'm which case great value! How do they ping? When I do these unmasking jobs I often find the bat underneath pings a lot better than when it was covered. This was particularly so for the old GM 303 Canon that I posted a few months ago. Made me wonder why they ever covered it up.

Nicely enough, for sure better than before but not surprising as the grain sheet and cover that’s over it combine to a pretty thick layer. Both lost over Oz removing that and the paint.

Question (and apologies if I missed this in the thread  :(), but do you believe these were *genuine* 'Puma'?  Or are they fake Puma with grain sheet?

I ask because a few years ago I decided to refurbish a Kooks Kahuna at the end of a season only to realize that it wasn't just a scuff sheet, but a scuff sheet *and* a grain sheet.  The scuff sheet, strategic stickers and edge tape had disguised the presence of the grain sheet very well.  Once removed there was a massive knot pretty covering about 20% of where the sweet spot was.

Once I could see this I immediately recognized the occasional hard plankiness I had felt - verified by bouncing a ball on the now dead spot.

It had been sold by a large sports retailer a few years before as a grade 3. (lesson learned - bespoke small batches since then)

Talking to a bat maker about this later, they said that it must have been a fake Kookaburra as Kooks would never have covered a performance affecting knot with a grain sheet and flogged it as their brand has too much to lose.

I remember thinking that the retailer was likely duped - as like Kooks they probably had too much to lose knowingly purchasing fakes.

However, your post now makes me wonder: Do any of the major brands actually engage in covering their willow with grain sheets?

Pretty sure many if not all major brands do it, GM, Kooka, GN etc for sure.

Given the source I’m pretty comfortable that they’re genuine Puma bats.

Re your story with kookaburra, given the don’t make many bats, I imagine they received it in its grain sheeted condition, so not much they can do about that.

Incidentally managed to catch the grainer one at just the right angle
To see the grains through the stains.
