Does it really matter about Right or Left Handed Pads?
« on: May 05, 2020, 10:01:10 AM »

Hi all,

So this may sound completely crazy and way off base, but my thoughts are with the great debate about which way round you should where your pads eg. Buckles on the inside or outside. Then does this then render the RH and LH pad out as you could be wearing them on the different why round.

I have looked at photos of the England players and even they are all different- some buckles inside, some outside.

It's about the side wing protection mate, which is different for RH and LH pads.

I find there’s extra padding depending if you’re left or right handed which protects the calf area more? But personally I have the straps don’t to the outside

Yeah this is the big difference for me, you really notice the lack of it when you get hit there.

GN used to make pads with 8 canes for the front leg, but I don’t think they do that anymore. The pads are identical now, other than which way the Velcro fastens. I have the buckles on the outside, so the strap ends are on the inside of my legs. Looks tidier, and I guess there’s less of a chance of being out LBW by the ball flicking one of the straps (not that I have ever heard or seen of this happening).

Yes I completely realise this, but are the RH pads made like this for for use with buckles on the outside? Because if you then where the pads with buckles on the inside surely you need to buy LH pads to get the right protection?

This is a pair of right handed pads

As you will see both pads have a side wing on the left.
This means you get extra protection on the calf that faces the bowler. This does not move to the other side depending where the buckle is.

In short, no pads are not designed by buckle position, they're simply left handed or right handed.

Thank you for raising this subject I found myself thinking the same thing the other day but @WalkingWicket37 has just explained it extremely well.

Exactly. Pads made for left handed batsmen have extra wing on their right (both pads) and pads made for right handed batsmen have extra protection to their left. Whether the straps face in or out is down to personal preference.

Kookaburra top of the range pads used to have extra protection on the front pad to the back pad (buckles on the outside).

Not going to lie, this is a bit of an odd thread.

Cool, thanks @WalkingWicket37 for the visuals, it explains it very well.

Could be ambidextrous pads, then it doesn’t matter

Haven't owned or used ambi pads but assume they make some compromises, ie bulkier pads or reduced protection?

No expert but I think by and large they have wings both sides making them bulkier and a little heavier.
