So a friend of mine went to a very popular bat maker today and took this bat to see if f it could be repaired, to be told that it wasn�t worth repairing as it would never be the same bat again!.
Which in my opinion is an outright lie, they were then directed to buy a bat from said maker, albeit at a discounted rate.
What are people�s opinion on this sort thing?

An image isn�t as easy to decide as in person, however it looks a pretty basic repair with limited impact on performance so would seem a bit extreme to suggest its not worth repairing

It�s a difficult balance and most things can be repaired, it�s just if it�s worth doing it. I see so many pointless repairs completed on social media, just because they can be repaired doesn�t mean they should be. Bats split fully in half are being repaired. Why I have no idea. It�s very easy to repair something that�s not worth it and take the customers money but that�s not right. Whilst no guarantees can be placed on if a repair will last, if I�m not confident that it will last a reasonable time or That it won�t be detrimental to the performance I won�t do it.

I do offer a discount off my bats in Lieu of what would be spent on the repair if it went ahead, but I think if you are honest with both your price for the repair and if it�s worth it then I don�t see this being an issue.

That�s fair enough, it�s just such an easy repair in my eyes that it just seems like bad form! I�m partly influenced by the fact that the lad who�s bat it is and subsequently bought the new one is not the brightest and is easily manipulated.

I agree with what Redink have said but some repair jobs depends on the bat. I've repaired some bats that are pretty much just kindling but the owners are attached to them or with a repair they are still a gun e.g. grafting on a piece of willow to a corner. As long as the owners know they could break at any moment.

That original repair job on the bat above is simple and easy to fix (From the photos you have provided).

Agree with the above. I've fixed bats which aren't in my opinion worth it, but have only done this if the owner is insistent and understands it may not last. If I thought a new bat offered better value I'd offer this, but I'd do the repair if they were aware of the options fully and still wanted it doing. Unless I thought there really was no point.

As John said it's difficult to say based on the pics, but looks easily fixed really.

Agree with Red Ink... but being on this forum... you should explain to your friend the wisdom of using any little excuse to buy a new bat

if you take the cynical point of view then I completely understand your position, but at the end of the day if you take the point of view that all these things are subjective then maybe the person just gave what they thought was an honest opinion then maybe the perspective changes.

One way of looking at it was the bat maker turned down a small job and risked no income had the person not been interested in a new bat from them.

Playing Devils advocate - It could be argued that if you are a professional - repairing a bat thats doubtful regarding the value of doing so is equally as dishonest as you know the user is unlikely to get value for money. (please note devil advocates statement at the beginning)

At the end of the day the "well known" bat maker is doing it to make a living / have a successful business and to do that they have to sell their products - I think its a very bold call to call someone unscrupulous as a result of this scenario.

like others have said, based on the pictures I think its repairable, in fact I have repaired similar myself - but I can completely understand that there's a strong chance it won't be the same bat and as such I can understand why this individual might not have thought it would be the best thing for your friend to do. Maybe they actually stopped them throwing good money after bad?

Just a thought. in reality we may never know.

I think it was totally wrong for them to say it will never be the same bat from the images I've seen. However, it is difficult to judge without knowing the extent of the damage.

If, for example, there is delamination, then that can be nigh on impossible to access and repair and therefore there is sometimes not much value in it. We wouldn't be able to see this from the pictures.

With that said, if the damage is limited to what we can see then the guy in question was just trying to sell a bat over a refurb in my opinion.

I think what you can say is that the repair may break again if mis-hit on the toe again.

Would it be the same bat? Clearly not, but would the performance be the same? Yes, probably, unless you are driving a yorker off the inside toe😉

Get it repaired and now he has two bats, one for nets and one for games.
V difficult to comment other than the fact that it could be taking advantage of someone who is naive!
Almost always get a second opinion if you can.
