Handle binding jig?
« on: July 29, 2020, 09:00:31 PM »

Just wondering how those small makers and DIYers do the handle binding without access to a powered lathe? Does anybody have any homemade jigs they would be happy to share?

TIA

Just dismantled mine to improve it, but essentially it's just drill powered at the handle end with the toe sitting in a lathe point set into wood, which is clamped in the vice. Simple set up and cheap, but works great and I can control the speed. It's similar to the set up JP Gavan uses, which you can see in some of his videos.

You can also bind it by hand. Needs a bit of patience but works fine.

Iv been doing the binding by hand on my new brand so far, takes about 30mins per bat.

I will build a binding jig or hoping to find a turning lathe on ebay or facebook groups over the winter but if your only making a fairly small amount its simple to do by hand just a bit boring.

Jp Gavans set up is simple though if your in a rush or just don’t want to do by hand

What type of twine do you use for the binding (cotton or nylon), and how tight do you go with the process. Any video links would be helpful...need to bind one :)

I've got a fairly simple handmade setup I bought on here when someone wanted rid of theirs, makes a world of difference compared to doing it by hand. Drill powered like most basic setups, it works well.

As for twine - butchers twine is easy to get hold of, doesn't need to be mega tight as it shrinks on a little when the glue dries.

As has been mentioned I just use butchers twine and as for tight I get it fairly taught and then glue over the top. I usually do half the handle, have a cuppa and then go back to it.

In the middle of sorting myself a turning lathe so hopefully not for much longer by hand.

I use a drill powered lathe atm. Got a motor and foot pedal to sort out but haven’t had chance to get it set up.

The one I use has the pivot and drive ends in clamps so you can clamp to any surface and any distance apart. I’ve got 2 spare sets if any one is interested. Just drop me a pm
