An old favourite
« on: November 01, 2020, 05:02:59 PM »

I stumbled across this the other week on a popular auction site with a couple of blurry pics and a description that said Newbery Harrow.
Luckily one of the few pics was of the top of the handle showing the “S” and that was it, purchased straight away.

This is one of my all time favourite bats for no other reason than in 2013 season  I scored 4 hundreds in a season with one of these. That was also around about the time I joined the forum so probably then sold it on lol. In all seriousness for some reason this has always been one of two models of bat I often look for hoping one day to come across one in excellent condition. This for its age is in amazing condition.

Weight is a shade under 2lb 8oz but it’s not a big bat, edges are 33mm Max, profile is fairly full but these have huge middles as you can see from the profile. Handle is a nice thick semi oval. This is from memory around about the time that in my opinion Newbery lost there way. Maybe it was when TK left but I went from loving Newbery bats and softs to never really owning one since that season.

For a bat that’s approaching 10 seasons old as I think the Thruxton was released about 2011/2012 the performance is still top
Notch. The person I bought it from really can’t have used it much as apart from the grip needing replacement it’s pristine. Not a sticker starting to peel or even the toe guard starting to lift.

Overall very happy, and for less than a tank of Diesel. Just  got one more pristine older bat to find now.

Proppa bat, that. Looks like a nice wide and forgiving middle.

Great find mate.
On a side note, I completely know what you mean about Newbury losing their way about that time. I used to love Newbury, i had a Mjonir which was one of the best bats I have owned.

The other bat I’m on the look out for funnily enough is a Mjolner but they released it again with a bigger profile but I think for one season only the same year they released the original Kudos but that particular shape seems to be as rare as hens teeth.

I'd love a proper Mjolnir. I miss the old Newbery.

I've got a GT 5 star with the cadbury stickers from around that time....by far the best bat I've ever owned. In fact every bat I've had since I compare to it and it is still my go to bat.

I had a Mjolnir and an Uzi. I still so regret selling the Uzi to a mate who doesn't even play anymore.  :(

Totally agree after this period kind of lost there way in that i always had them as a top end classy brand, Now they are a shadow of that in my opinion when i think of the Newbury brand

There was one called the Navarone too, I think. The Newbery bats used to be the mainstay of my local shop. All the other brands would send pretty ugly bats, especially GN - but the Newbery's were always belters. I had a Grizzly and a Mjolnir for a while.
