« on: January 22, 2021, 01:53:54 PM »

Quick timeline off his Insta - April 2019 = GM (with a NB bat behind his GM), Dec 2019 = NB, June 2020 = still NB, 2020 = GN, Early 2021 = DSC

I'd say that's still fairly regular on the moves  :D

Surprised brands entertaining such players tbh. Not sure how many DSC bats will sell due to Burns use their brand.

I think in this case there's a little more to it:

Left GM for £££ with NB

Pandemic hit NB drops players

Signed short term deal with GN for the bubble series'

DSC is essentially a nb deal as I think we all know he'd still be with them if it wasn't for covid

Who are DSC? seem to have cornered the T20 market in terms of sponsoring big(ish) names. must have some decent funding behind them to throw this much money around? could end up being another Spartan

Think they were around for a long time making bats for other brands before branching out into marketing their own line of cricket gear.

I wonder myself if the sponsor manufacturers will ever go to a different sponsorship arrangement.

Let's say you have a new GN model, used by Robin Smith, complete with yellow grip and top of the range wood.

The Robin Smith 1000 Excalibur for arguments sake.

Every bat sold gets 5.00 paid to the player for advertising the bat for a 12-24 month period.

The manufacturer does not pay out up front payments and the margin they control because they have exact costs mapped out.

Just wondered really.

Problem with that is, the players moost likely wont agree - as they would want a guaranteed fee.

can see the appeal to a really big name player, but to the likes of rory burns i cant imagine he shifts many bats so an upfront payment for brand visibility is a better deal. Would be interested to know the kind of money he and similar level players get, after all its just putting stickers on your bats which are made elsewhere.

DSC also look like they give every player their own design, that cant be a cost effective way to sell kit. unless all the retail bats are the same shape and they just add labels

Yes sure I can see that and it maybe not so attractive to the player as @wasted_talent says.

There is now a worldwide market for the big UK and Asian brands whereas before you would think it’s more a home market for UK based like GN and GM etc

Also, it limits your overall exposure - few brands want more than 4 or 5 models, tops - yes, they could name each after a different sponsored player.  But it would become very difficult to get in the public eye when those players had a run of injuries.

And Pros are notoriously picky about using a bat named after a rival - look how noone would use the 405 when Fearnly made it, despite them being absolutely beautiful bats!

Yes that is a very good point.
