Craig's 2021 Refurbishments
« on: January 24, 2021, 08:15:41 PM »

Hi all,

Over the last 3/4 years, my activity on the forum has been a little limited to say the least. I have enjoyed posting more recently, so I thought now would be a good time to get a refurbishment topic going, posting photos of some of the bats I work on. Most of these bats form will part of my personal collection, with each of the finished bats being individually boxed up.

I hope you find this topic enjoyable, and if not, there will be plenty of photos of bats (and who doesn't like bat photos?!).

Bat 1 - Woodworm Premier Wand

The first bat that I have been working on this year is a Woodworm Premier Wand, one from my personal collection.

I contacted Woodworm before starting this bat to see if they had any retro stickers laying around, which they did not, so I was conscious that I needed to do all I can to keep the stickers in the best possible condition.

The bat wasn't in bad condition for it's age, with no real damage but there was some heavy oil stains, a large amount of mud on the toe and a low quality clear scuff sheet applied that, when removed, left a huge amount of residue. Using 'Sticky Stuff Remover' and a blunt drawknife, I was able to get the majority of the residue off of the bat with the stickers still in tact. Sanding then began, using my trusty drill mounted drum sander. After a few minutes, the bigger willow areas had been taken back to 'white wood'

Once the initial sand had been done, it was then onto hand sanding, starting with 180 grit sandpaper to work in the fiddly areas and getting the rest of the bat ready for the finer sanding process. This included going around the stickers and working on the shoulders. Fine sanding is all done by hand and will see me work through grit 240, 400, 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper.

The final piece of work that takes in the workshop is the polishing. Using a high power drill and a mop, I use a hyfin polish to complete the refurbishment. A new black chevron grip was also applied.

Frustratingly, the photos do not do this bat justice, but I am pleased that I have been able to revive a legendary bat to its former glory. This one is going to be boxed up and put aside, ready to go into my new cricket bat rack (w.i.p.). I hope you all enjoy the finished product:

What's Next?

I have completed a full refurbishment on 2 x Gunn & Moore Diamond Bats today, 1 x 808 L540 & 1 x Original L555, both of which I managed to pick up off eBay earlier in the month. They have been completely stripped down to plain and are going back to GM tomorrow, each to be given a new set of Diamond labels, but I will post some process photos of these two bats in the next couple of days.

I also have a 2005 Gunn & Moore Maxi Original arriving on Tuesday, so that will no doubt form part of a future post!

Enjoy :D

Nice job!
Having never seen one before, I'm still unsure if it's an optical illusion that the bat is narrower where the W sticker is?

Not an illusion. We've got a couple in our club bags, there's an indent (for lack of a better word) in the edge towards the top of the bat.

Not an illusion. We've got a couple in our club bags, there's an indent (for lack of a better word) in the edge towards the top of the bat.

That narrowing was a unique feature of Woodworm bats. From their Website:

"It all began back in September 2001 when Joe Sillett was hunting in his garage for a bat ahead of a Sunday match for his club side Brook in Surrey versus The Zombies.

The only one he could find had a bad case of woodworm, and to repair the damage, Joe's father Bob carved out small curves towards the top of the bat, finishing it by hand and a Black and Decker power sander.

In the match, using his oddly shaped bat, he scored 142 not out, and it was at that point Joe decided to found The Woodworm Cricket Company, with our now famous shaped bats.

Things started slowly with just over 200 bats sold in the first year. However by 2005 word had spread and this rocketed to over 15,000, with additional endorsement coming from big name players such as Flintoff and Pietersen".

Lovely finish on that mate, not sure I have the patience to hand sand through the grits for that long though!

Bat 2 & 3 - Gunn & Moore Diamonds

These two GM bats are from my (ever growing) personal collection and were both refurbished a few months ago by myself. I was a little hesitant about the Original bat due to the excessive tape, but decided to take the plunge.

Using a heat gun and more of the Sticky Stuff remover, the old stickers and scuff sheets were taken off the bats. The sticker residue on both gave me a good battle but after a short while, sanding could begin. As with the Woodworm bat listed above, I started with grit 150 sandpaper on my drum sander, getting the bat down to 'white wood'. Hand sanding then commenced, working from grit 180 sandpaper through to grit 1000, before hitting the polishing mop to complete the refurb.

As GM do not send out stickers, both made the trip back to Nottingham, where GM have applied a new set of stickers, a scuff sheet, new grips and a toe guard. This morning, both arrived back so I thought I would share the before and after pictures.

Enjoy!

Very nice. Just goes to show what a good grade 808s are, albeit the original is tasty. Can imagine the response on these is top notch.

Did you ask GM just to resticker/grip/ toe and no cleanup as you had already done that?
I’m always weary for full refurbs as bats can come back lighter, so prefer to do the cleanup myself.
Obviously with GM stickers over the scuff this is not always ideal.

And if so would you mind divulging how much they charge for a “sticker service”?

Nice job!  If you've gone to 1000 grit and polished, I bet they shine beautifully :)

Interesting that the Original has gone from L555 to L540.  The blade looks taller in 3 of the pics -surely GM would still have the correct stickers?
