Yep. Dropped for Lyth. Then we had  Hameed, Jennings, Stoneman, with another chance for ZZZ Compton in there too.

Ben Duckett... Alex Hales...

We'd all have loved it if one of them had become our version of Warner to be fair. At the same time, Warner is crap in English conditions so there was a fairly obvious precedent not to use those kind of players to open in England.

A product of Bayliss(brilliant as he was in one day cricket) trying to merge the two different formats, perhaps his Australian background with the kook ball and batting under the sun influenced how he thought we could get a number 3 to bash it everywhere, except this is England and it's rarely been done at a high level.

I'm unsure on Burns myself, Crawley and Sibley seem to fit better and to be potentially good at test level.

I think Burns does need to get some County runs behind him for this summers international games, he deserved his chance and maybe deserves a longer run.

Might be a good time for any of the top 3 in the County sides to have a good start in the CC.

Personally I would like to see the two Notts players Hameed and Joe Clarke have good seasons, I'm a Middx fan so Robson as well-he's decent.

The new selection bandwagon didn't take long to form then! At least it isn't Ian Bell now...

More cheerfully, isn't it nice to have some proper cricket back on!

Did he ever get a 2nd bite? I know all the other tried and failed openers did, but I can’t recall Robson coming back in to the England fold and failing again.

Did they?  As far as I can recall Jennings was the only one to get a recall (Compton having earlier batted in the middle order and Root, for he must overall be deemed to have failed as an opener, going the other way).

On the other hand, Carberry, Lyth, Stoneman, Hales, Roy, Hameed and Duckett...not another sniff

Will be interesting to see how Hameed gets on with the extra responsibility he's being given this year. Can't believe that someone that talented won't come again at the top level.

Joe Clarke is a proper player but I'm not sure I see where he finds a spot in the England side at any point in the next few years at least. Can't see him overtaking Lawrence or Pope for a middle order slot.

James Vince is so easy on the eye when in form. Not sure what happens to him in England colors.

It’s all about temperament. He could have been one of England’s best ever if his brain didn’t short circuit every single time. I can’t remember him ever getting out to a good ball - almost always self-inflicted.

Mitch Starc comes to mind

I'd class that more as freakish bad luck than a good ball... Agree Vince is supremely frustrating though, I've only seen archive footage of Gower but he has the same kind of elegance and ease in his batting.

Vince has all the shots in the book and all the time in the world to play them, he's doesn't get bored because he gets double hundreds and I think he is on 160 today and could easily get another double ton tommorow.

There's not really an explanation other than he's does not have a brain so doesn't learn because he gets out the same way, he never felt comfortable at England level due to lacking confidence or.....something else.

It's pretty baffling really...I think he's a fabulous player. Maybe he is missing a bit of steel in his personality to drive him on when things get tough at a higher level.

He bats the opposite of someone like Ramprakash who just mentally was too tightly strung.

I do wonder sometimes whether a good coach early on can mold a player to emphasise the good bits and add the missing bit over time.

Cook always refers to how Gooch influenced his game at England and Essex level

He seems like one of those annoyingly naturally talented players who never had to give it much thought growing up, always excelled, and was always destined to make a career out of it. However, at the very sharp end of professional sport you need a bit more than just talent. You need to really want it, and you need to be strong mentally. I don’t think he has either of those qualities. It’s a shame someone like Dave Alred never got hold of him.

Well summed up. Seen plenty look out of their depth but watching Vince most of his one day and tests innings he didn't look out of place to me.

But. Whatever it was he didn't quite have it. Hick and Ramprakash also in this group.
