Is it just me or is the "spirit of cricket" in decline?  From reading these game reviews it does seem to be.

We bowled really well Sat and bowled oppo out for 61....included a five min wait for number 11 (who had just arrived ) to come out to bat. We could have appealed of course but in spirt and as number 11 we didnt - we ran him out first ball! As weather forecast bad we asked to go straight back out but their umpire (we didnt have one) said no and had to sit through a 30 min break with clouds darkening. We got to 14 without loss before it rained.....their captain then said he was calling game off, got changed and brought in stumps....then some discussions happened with half of their team saying they wouldnt play but umpire intervened surprisingly and said it was his call.  Stopped raining but their umpire said we need a 40 minute wait to dry "a little" and guess what it rained again so that was that. frustrating!

Honest answer.. Yes

more Win at all costs teams, teams/clubs trying to act like it's a professional set up mixed in with football mentality all adding together to make games less pleasant to play in sadly.

My first game back in three seasons on Saturday after breaking my ankle and leg and then life taking full swing.

I was a childless 20 year old who was in half decent shape, now I'm a dadbod 23 year old. I hope the skipper isn't expecting much with the weather today menaing nets were cancelled.

Great to hear, welcome back!! If it does rain enjoy the chance to chat to your teammates. If it doesn’t, enjoy the game 😃😃

Absolutely pointless game today due to a first teamer for them stepping down for dubious reasons and winning the game by himself.

He opened the bowling, as he does several leagues higher, and took about 4-10. I saw off his opening spell but didn’t score many off him, he then ran through our lower middle order when he came back on.

We were all out for 120-ish which was never enough. Not content with his 4-for he then came out to open the batting and hit 90 odd not out as they chased it in 15 overs. We didn’t bowl particularly well but the fact that he didn’t give a single chance away tells you he’s way too good for this level. After scoring nearly 1000 runs and taking 50 wickets for their club this year I would have thought he’d have batted a bit lower down but apparently not.

Ruined what could have been a decent village game. Though the icing on the cake was when the lad who scores for us overheard their skipper saying “I don’t play to give people a game, I play to win” which was pretty ironic given that he opened the bowling with himself, despite not being one of their better bowlers.

Grim that. We've been on the end of a few of those this year and it does make you wonder what the (No Swearing Please) am I giving up my Saturday for?

I just don’t get what you get out of it. It’s very rare that I’ve played in a game where I find it too easy but it has happened occasionally.

I played a friendly against a team a couple of months ago where I honestly think I would have scored a double ton had I batted through the overs. I knocked it around sensibly and got to my 50 and retired and then didn’t bowl. I would have felt no sense of achievement had I scored 200.

Think the worst part though was some of their team getting cocky and giving it the big one as if they hadn’t just been carried to victory by a fella who knew he was far too good.

Played my first game in 6 weeks today for our Sunday side which is basically development side and some now older ex sat players and a couple of really just social players. Played top of the league and I haven’t lost a game all season and are a very young and decent team.
Opened up and scored 97* gutted to miss out on a ton. The consensus was there howling attack in the lowest league available in the Hunts Sunday league was stronger than we face most Saturdays and we are mid leagues in two counties so not a bad level of cricket. We posted 181 from our 40 with our 12 yr old county player getting permission to play his first senior league game batting at the end with me and getting his first senior runs so that was cool.

The same 4 players for the oppo who all bowled 10 overs each where them 1,2,3 & 4 in there order and the opener scored 120 not out and they knocked it off for the loss of 2 wickets in 21 overs and proceeded to tell everyone  I would listen to check out there stats on play cricket which we found amusing especially when upon reaching his 100 he went as aloft was the a big jump and bat wave much like a test players scoring his first 100 to the 8 spectators and two dogs and then kiss the badge. And I thought I was serious at times.

Good to finally to get a game in and felt great scoring some runs again as not been given much of a chance when iv played league cricket this season on a sat. Overall was good to watch decent players score but just for me cemented the fact that Sunday cricket is now just seen as the same as Sat league cricket and it’s just to win and that’s it. God knows that the 6 players that did nothing at all for them all game make of it if it happens every week. Why they are in the lowest Sunday league I’ll never know.
I was asked to open by our skipper as at the toss oppo skipper did warn us this was the strongest side they have had all season and then upon winning the toss chose to bowl so given the attack was like facing a sat league team would have been to much for the 4 under 15 batters we have who play Sunday’s

and you're surprised why?? People love beating on people and 'winning' is all that matters to them. He's had a great day, can look at his stats, boast a bit in the bar.. He's loved it and his team won't care either because you know... 'we' won. The captain is again, just an a'hole.. again, just someone who cares only for winning. lots of them around cause you know.. amateur cricket is do or die stuff.. careers on the line... oh wait

just laugh at players like that.. they aren't pro's.. just sad people who like to beat on lesser players. laugh, just treat the game as fun and move on to next week.

This is exactly what players should be like!! if it's easy, just KNOCK it around for 1's and 2's, the odd 4 and let the lesser guys bat. TeThe opps will have an enjoyable day, your team will have an enjoyable day, the game will be more fun overall...

it's like any player like that, overseas or paid players... the team around them and even the players in the other lower teams of a club genuinely then think 'they' won or are the same level etc.. They don't even realise (or care) that they are basically being carried

game yesterday... IF I was an a'hole I could have got a ton off not many balls but what's the point? it's not learning, training or going to help me in any way other than inflate an ego. The opposition (especially the one young kid) would have gone away hating life etc.. the team would have got nothing out of it, the game would have been dead...   instead, knock it about and let others do the batting. sure, we 'only' scored 168 but meh.... you don't need to blast 200+ on Sunday's and just piss people off

An ongoing theme on this thread is the Spirit Of Cricket declining. I batted down the order so was asked to umpire the first part of our reply on Saturday. After a few overs I got into a heated argument with the opposition bowler and skipper. The subject of their ire? I had the temerity to ask the square leg umpire for confirmation that it WASN'T a waist height No Ball. This continued with the snide remarks whenever I signalled a wide etc.
The skipper talked to me after the game apologising for his behaviour saying that he is just competitive. So he recognises his behaviour is unacceptable but doesn't change it...

ah, that old chestnut... Still don't get why being gobby and aggressive means you're being competitive.. it's like you can't be competitive without being a $%^%. (which is utterly wrong anyway tbf)

When you open the batting in a charity game and the oppo has a 6ft 7 Aussie opener charging down the hill bowling nasty in ducker.

Oh and the one on the edge was given "Lbw" 😭

come on Buzz... You know to a league umpire that a minor fact like hitting it first doesn't mean you're not out... and they won't listen to you even if you were the most honest person ever.. They think they are always right.

Ha this was a charity game and the umpire bought be a beer at lunch and said he wanted someone else to get a go... Nothing about cheeting league umpires.
