Hi,

I have been trying to understand how to recognize a storm damaged willow. Is it even possible to identify this on a finished bat? I looked for any tips/info on here and youtube that would help me identify storm damage but didn't find anything (except for a youtube video from IJC).

Can you experts share any knowledge on this and let me know if the pics below is indication of storm damage?

That�s no storm damage, maybe healing or a bar stain.

It can often be seen with the naked eye but is bloody hard to capture in a photograph. If you use the search function you�ll find as good example of it as are available online.

I know this has probably been covered lots before but what do you think would be a fair price to pay for a piece of storm damaged willow? A mate of mine has just been gifted a bat by a manufacturer and it doesnt suit him but it does me. I've never seen a piece of wood this good before with 20+ grains 30% heart wood all dead straight. The fact it contains storm damage has never been hidden from him or the manufacturer, so he has asked me if I wanted it. I'm going to have it but will insist he has some money for it so how much would be fair to pay for a bat that I know will perform incredible well but may last 3 or 30 games?

No way of knowing how long it will last, it could go well for any length of time or could go straight away. How much storm damage is there? In what area? Is it all the way through the blade?

The storm damage lasts about 3 years into the white wood from the heart wood,, I know there is no way of knowing how long it will last. The ping from it is so good tho I know I am going to have a lot of fun with it while its still in 1 piece! I just wonder what would be fair to pay for it? I heard a few years back that 1 of the manufacturers were selling "storm damage willow" but cant remember who or how much they were charging, maybe someone on here could tell me?

I wouldn't pay anything for a storm damaged cleft.

Willow merchants try to find this before sending out as do bat makers however sometimes it will only be seen during and after the sanding process. On this basis the cleft is worthless unless made into a small junior bat where the impact and addition al stress will not cause too much damage to the affected area.

Some bat makers have sold them, usually for �70 or less. If it�s second hand I wouldn�t be paying more than �40/50 for it.

If he didn't pay anything for it and doesn't want anything for it, buy him a beer and say thanks is my suggestion.

As Rich says, you sometimes don't see it until you sand the bat. I've had a few refurbs through the shop recently from well established brands where it's present though, as its sometimes difficult to see. Hadn't caused any damage/weakness, but you never know.

Got a storm damaged G3 I'm using this year too as I wouldn't sell it, but its flying so no detriment in terms of performance.

I understand a storm damaged bat could go at any time, but would I be right in thinking that if it is around the splice it is more likely to fail sooner than in the main part of the blade?

From what I'm told from other batmakers, it's an unknown but in their experience it comes down to the extent if storm damage (does it run through most of the blade etc). So, around the splice could certainly cause issues. Still, it's a complete unknown as you just can't really say. As with anything, lots of variables thrown into the mix which could determine how long it lasts
