Hello,

I'm finding it difficult to find a bottle of good old cricket bat oil and was looking at alternatives. I'm aware that boiled linseed oil isn't recommended but came across food grade linseed oil in German supermarkets which is advertised as cold-pressed, 100% natural and unrefined linseed oil. Can I use this to oil my cricket bat?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: linseed (not lineseed. Failing at multitasking, again!)

I’d say food grade oil would not be good. I imagine it would go rancid and allow mould spores to grow. May be wrong though, but personally wouldn’t risk my bat going mouldy!
Linseed oil is easy to get hold of usually. Where are you based?

Oh. In that case I would use a furniture wax. It will do the same job.

Raw linseed oil was available at loads of hardware stores in Oslo, can’t think Germany would be so different!

Paderborn, Germany.

Nice part of the world. I've been there a few times. Always thought it was strange that a river/stream runs under it instead of through it.

Chemists in Holland also stock raw linseed oil. I'd try the German (2-0) chemists too.

Shortest in river in Germany too. I'll have a look at a chemist tomorrow. Thanks!

Make sure it's raw and not boiled linseed.

Look for raw linceed or flack seed oil, or Lord Sheraton wood balsam if you can get it.

Internet searches for raw linseed oil returned results for 2-3L cannisters. Small bottles were either boiled linseed oil or linseed varnish (basically another type of boiled linseed oil). I have contacted a small-ish cricket store to ask if maybe they have something in stock. Thanks for all the help.
