Hey, I was knocking the edges for about 40 mins (almost done) after boning, either glancing or knocking 45 degree angle. I can see last few mins the willow started opening up as shown in the attached pic.

It can be noticed too closely or move the finger around the edges. Should I be concerned or grains are opening up which is good thing? Note, I�m done with this side of edge also 2 coats of oil has been with 24 hours interval.

This isn�t the bat �opening up� .. that happens on the face, along the grains, and takes time. This is just very minor damage to edge, which can sometimes happen. Easy to repair and won�t cause issues - just use a knife to pry open the crack all along the edge (till you�ve reached the end of the crack), and insert some wood glue in there. Then wrap tight with tape, which you can remove a day later.

Depends on the conditions, but I try not to knock a bat in until maybe a week after oiling. From what I've been told, oil initially firms up the surface upon application, but then after it settles in, it lifts the fibres, so essentially undoes a little bit of the press. You might have gotten unlucky with the bit of willow, but could also be a few other factors such as:

Knocking in before the oil has settled
Going a little too hard on the knocking too early
Knocking at too much of an angle
Flat faced bats I've found to have this kind of damage occur more often than rounder faced bats

Things that you can do to try mitigate any further opening of these cracks have been mentioned above. In terms of prevention, rolling the edges at small increments of pressure then starting the knocking gently and slowly increasing the force I've found to help prevent this.

This is nothing to worry about. If you are compelled to do something about it: Glue it. Let it sit and dry up. Put a piece of scuff sheet or edge tape to cover it up.

My experience as well... I lightly oil the face and let if sit for a few days; then, oil the back and other areas to soak up a light coat of oil for moisture retention. This oiling/drying takes a good week or so. Once oil is dry/soaked, then knock.

Yes that�s right. I can sense the ping and sound is amazing so far with the knock in progressing.
