Oliver has a birthday coming up, and he's ready to move up to a size 6 bat. So we took the opportunity to drive over to Wakefield and buy him a new one in person. He's had 2 warriors previously, loved them both, and there was never any real question about him getting another when it was needed. It's lovely to visit the workshop and chat with Ian. As a soon to be 12 year old, this was the first time Ollie was really able to engage with Ian about his bat preferences (I'm a non cricketer) and the spent a good while trying out different bats and swinging them around! Trying them blindfolded was a fun experience!

Anyway, he ended up going fully traditional, and Ollie spent an hour in the car examining the grains in minute detail, running his fingers over the wood and the stickers before pronouncing it beautiful as we were half way along the M62. He's now been nagging for an hour to take it out for a net.......... It could be a long wait till October. The bat weighs in at 2lb 4oz, and cost �100.

I am curious about the blindfold exercise. What's the thought behind it? I have never done it.

The blindfold exercise was simply a way of getting him to feel how the bats felt without being influenced by how they looked. It was quite a clever idea really. He was looking at 3 blank bats. One was a bit heavier, one had a line of heartwood down one side, and the other was the one that Ollie chose. Once he chose the bat he could choose the grip and stickers for styling.

A bat that looks as good as that does for �100?! Glad he can appreciate some high quality bats, and that you've invested a lot to ensure that he has a great experience despite not playing the sport yourself. Lucky lucky boy. (And a lucky wallet for you too)

Funny story about that. A few years ago a work colleague told me she had just bought her son a hand made bat. She is a bit posh, and quite frankly I thought she was just showing off about how much money she had spent on her son. Then she told me- it was �70 if I remember correctly. So I took Ollie along to Warrior because he got shown around the workshop and had every stage of batmaking explained and demonstrated. At the end he got a bat that he really valued that was actually cheaper than a standard big brand that would have been exactly like all the others at the field. It was one of my better decisions, and Ollie treats his bats with a lot of care and respect.

I treat my bats with great care and respect. I just can't stand the savagery of throwing/leaving bats on the ground or baking under the sun light. Some people! *eye roll*

A brand not often seen on here. It's the fella who used to work for Slazenger, isn't it?

The blindfold thing would be great for a lot of people on here. Though I'm not sure it would really work over the internet.

That's right. I'm not sure of his exact "heritage"- he has told me but I don't know the people involved so it went over my head a bit!

The blindfold/wouldn't work over the internet point is obviously true. I bought his last bat from Warrior by ordering it over the phone. The bat was (obviously) just as good as the ones I get from the workshop, but it filters back into this perceived value/appreciation idea. Buying any bat online is no different from buying a food processor off Amazon- it works, but you don't love it. Oliver loves his bat, and that makes an hours drive each way more than worth it to us.
