I reckon CA had this up their sleeve, then when the time was right (and Paine had served his purpose) they threaten to release the messages and force Paine to quit, leaving them free to bring in a proper Batter Keeper for the Ashes.

Seems a strange decision all round to me as CA are fully aware and a panel cleared him but he is resigning due to this, Jump before pusher I feel.

Personally I’m not best pleased as Aus can now pick a keeper that can A) score runs B) use DRS properly ffs.

Bloke was a useless batsmen, avg keeper and captain but steered aus through a challenging period I guess

They've said he's still in the squad, just not skipper. Does seem very bizarre, especially considering that the investigation was already done and concluded he'd done nothing wrong.

Have to feel a bit sorry for him as it sounds like the CA employee in question is lashing out because she's been accused of theft.

Absolutely this.

Of the other keepers.... Josh Philippe is currently 2nd highest Shield run scorer averaging 62, Jimmy Pierson is averaging 53 having scored 2 hundreds. Carey only has 148 runs @ 29.

Cummins looks to be the captain for now.

First bowler to be captain for 60-odd years.

I do wonder why they don’t give it back to Steve Smith. He’s served his time, was a good captain and still very well respected as a phenomenal cricketer. If he’s still in the team after what went on during his captaincy, then surely there’s no real difference.

Was Smith actually a good captain or was he just a phenomenal player who made up for his side's deficiencies? Don't recall him being tactically brilliant and he doesn't come across as an excellent man manager.

They can't go back to Smith, surely? Yes he's served his 'leadership ban' or whatever but come on. Give it to a fast bowler for a change.

I remember during Paine's reign and after Smith had served his ban, Smith was essentially doing the captaining and I guess they lost a fair few tests. Notably at the Gabba

There seems to be a common issue where a scandal is only a scandal if it’s public knowledge and therefore subject to everyone and anyone making a moral judgement.

Paine was cleared of any serious wrongdoing earlier why should it be any different now?

Unless after the Smith Bancroft Warner cheating episode CA could not sack Paine straight after that as they would look silly.

There’s no way Australia would want to change Captains 3 weeks before the Ashes.

It’s a bit strange, there could of course be as yet undisclosed information about it

Public disclosure is a key component of the definition of scandal!

Agree that as he was cleared back when it happened 4 years ago, and as it seems his wife and children are still with him it's been accepted there too, it seems ridiculous that he should have to resign the Captaincy now.

Unless CA didn't know back then, which seems equally ridiculous.

Timing is awful, and smells of media doing an exposé timed to sell maximum copies.  Cnuts.

AUS to benefit. Better keeper batsmen in their ranks. And probably better options for captain too.
