Not entirely unrelated to the other thread, I fear.

It's a grainy bat, knot is on it's back, this might even strengthens the bat.
For me it's not an issue.
Bat makers on here will know better.

So you'd be happy if you paid £600 and a bat with a huge knot in the back turned up?

I get that as a functional bat - this might not cause any issues. But this is a premium bat made from the top 1% of willow - it should be near flawless in looks. It might have the odd blemish out the playing area, but I certainly wouldn't expect any knots like that - and so near the splice as well. I'm not a batmaker, but I think the issue the buyer has (and everyone else should also have) is what on earth are they paying a premium for in this case. You'd think this would have been picked up in a QC stage by them, and they'd have graded it as a lower grade bat, and went for a sticker option rather than having it as an engraved model. But of course - in cases like this - common sense/honest grading and maximising profit don't really go hand in hand.

That's a dead knot, that bit of wood is effectively rotten and that's why they are usually full of filler. It absolutely won't strengthen the area and while it MIGHT not break because of the knot, if I paid £600 for that I'd be sending it straight back. Customer must feel like he's got mug written on his forehead for them having the audacity to send that out as a top 1% bat.

Where are you quoting from, because you didn't buy the bat did you?

It is really sad to see the way that a brand like Newbery has completely lost its way.

The last Newbery items I purchased was a set of SPS softs.  I had sent both back before the end of April as the stitching was unpicking.  There is only so long as a brand that you can keep shifting terrible quality products at top end prices before your reputation catches up with you

Dead knots aren’t always rotten. They just have a tendency to fall out because they lose connection with the surrounding wood, thus becoming dead.

I received a Mjolnir SPS bat like this once a few years ago. Top of the range, and it arrived with a huge, dead knot like that in the middle of the playing area. It was a physical lump that you could feel. It was supposed to be 2lb 7oz, and it arrived at 2lb 11oz or something...
