DIY weight reduction
« on: January 08, 2022, 06:22:04 PM »

Looking to reduce the weight of my old match bat, such a nice bat but stopped using it because it was too heavy as I got older. Has anyone tried it themselves? Thinking a convex spokeshave would be my tool of choice? Any advice greatly appreciated

Few questions:
Do you already have the tools, and also do you have a workbench with a vice to clamp the bat down on?
How far are you from a batmaker? (Ie. are you in the UK, or in Norway for example)

If you don't have the setup/tools and it's a one off, would recommend sending it off to get professionally weight reduced. If it's something you don't care too much about, then it'll still probably cost you more money and hassle to setup. An alternative is if you have an orbital sander - it'll take you a while, but you can remove weight using it with a coarse grade of sanding disc. If you decide to go down the route of handtools, then a convex spokeshave should do the trick, but again depends on how much you want to take out

I'm in the far West of Cornwall so no one really local. Got a work bench and vice, a top grade orbital sander, no spokeshave. Never considered the sander, might be the best option as I'm not sure how much I need to reduce, by sanding I can go gradually, and would be difficult to take too much off.

Use the sander with some 80grit on
Easiest way is to take the spine down a bit, especially if there’s a lot of wood there
Obviously you can remove wood all along the profile depending on how thick the edges etc are
The toe/peak spine area usually affects the pick up the most, so try and sort that first
Again, an easy way is to compare it to a bat you like the feel of,,,,

Using the sander should hopefully stop you digging chunks out of the bat, that you then have to sand out anyway

Easy way is how @Northernmonkey said otherwise its cheaper to get it done by batmaker etc..as cost of the tools outweighs getting it done once.
