I don't mean this to come across rude but I do have to chuckle at statements like this.
0.5oz (14g) in a 2lb 9.5 bat = 1%

But I totally understand handles not feeling quite right in the hands, and will tinker with tape under the grip to get if feeling just right.

100% in our heads when it's that little weight 😂 but then I reckon at least 50% of batting is in your head too!

Agreed. Weighing a bat straight away is not a good thing. When people come into the workshop, they often don't guess the weights of bats and will pick one up and say something like 'this feels lovely', then when they find out it's an oz or two heavier than their prefered dead weight, will soon look at something else.

I did a post on Instagram this week about handle thickness and how it affects the dead weight. I might start a thread on this, but it's similar to the binding post i made in this thread. You can use thinner thread, lighter grips, use tape instead etc etc all to hit scale weight. But imo the bat won't feel as good in the hands as one which is an oz or so heavier, but which has that weight in or near the hands.

Adding another grip will help the balance/pick up, but surely then add weight and cause further issues with cuts and pulls, if this is your concern?

If half an oz is causing issues on back foot shots, I'd. Keep the bat as is and do some bicep curls! 😂 That said, if it doesn't feel right to you and you can't get away from this, then it doesn't feel right. All points to buying another bat!

I agree that half an ounce is negligible. But I wanted this bat to be 2,8 to match another match bat of mine.
2,9 feeling I couldve cope with. But nearing 2,10 and feeling a bit more (unlike my old bat) after playing in for an hour I had to hit the scales to check my options. So my tolerance was pushed over 1.5 ounces but I thought if I lose the half it’ll be more in my comfort zone and only a negligible ounce rather than 2.
I dont think the mix of chevron grip and toe protector helps out my allergy to bottom heavy feeling bats. I have a 6ft 4 mate who can really bowl well above the average club team mate I’m used to. And in the past a bat being just that tad heavy has got me in trouble facing him. So a weary lesson learnt. I’m confident a thicker handle in whichever grip/tape combo I experiment with will solve the balance and pickup niggle. Also just playing with it everyday I’ve got very used to it now so looking forward to a new grip to arrive soon to make the difference. And due to illness I have realised I’ve lost size so bicep curls are actually needed too! 😂
I very much appreciate all the suggestions guys and will refer back to them forever more 👍

Could you remove the toe guard and replace with varnish or shoe goo to improve feel slightly too?

Yes I thought I’d give it a season with it on and wait until it starts falling off. I think the thicker grip or tape will make the bat too heavy which is what I prefer. So the blade will feel like a wand. The bat itself is a very well balanced bat. It just needs a thicker handle.

I have two different thicknesses of binding. Thin one adds 3/4 of an oz, thicker one 1 1/4oz. Obviously i suppose this would fluctuate slightly depending on the thickness of the handle. My chevron grips weigh 1 3/4oz roughly.

I prefer double binding as think 2 grips feels a little spongy, but that's just my preference.

This is exactly how I found this thread. I want to thicken the handle, but hate more than one grip and so am thinking about adding an extra layer of binding. Anyone got any recommendations on how to do this?

Or, as a test, if I added medical tape, does it have the same feel as another grip? Ie. slightly spongey and probably not for me.

Adding binding isn't difficult, just need to buy some twine and glue it around the existing binding making sure it's tied off correctly. Better to do this on a lathe, but you can do it by hand. Or take it tl any batmaker or repairer and they should be able to do it. Tape will dk a very similar job.

Tape is similar but I found it feels a bit spongier compared to rebinding. Definitely not as much so as extra grips so worth a go as a roll of tape is cheap as chips.
