No idea what the comment above is trying to say but I digress...

As long as your kid is enjoying himself and you're encouraging that then you're going about it absolutely the right way.

Definitely a stretch as a teenager when I wouldn't listen to a word from my old man but a lot of good memories of learning from him and now wish we'd done more sport together before his knees packed in!

No one will like to be told off to be a pushy dad, even that's true many a time! Choice of yours 👍

Would a pushy Dad tell you off for your antics on eBay?

If any of you are in Vienna sometime come around to indoor nets too! You'll get a bat even if you come on time.

Vienna as in Austria??
Exactly that one. Not to be confused with Vienne in Dauphiné.

What a mature response. Not sure I expected much more from an eBay swindler. You still ignoring the thread you’re being called out in?

Our skipper as organised as an Alzheimer’s patient so didn’t book nets till late so only slot 9-10 which is too late for me due to distance so prob won’t be netting until April unless I find another club which may be on cards anyway

I’m interested to know if anybody feels like they actually get anything out of indoor net sessions.

Like many others, we train at a school which has ridiculously bouncy tracks. We get 5 minutes in the spin net - where every ball spits off the surface - and then 5 minutes in the seam net where length balls rear up to the chest from people who have never got the ball above hip height outside.

As a left-hander, I have to watch every other ball sail down leg to the point that I only hit 8 balls in my 5 minutes in the seam net.

I’ve started to just consider these nets a social event rather than any kind of training. Does anyone here actually have a net set-up which is actually conducive to improving?

Indoor nets massively depends on the facilities you have and who turns up, I find it as simple as that.

Like you say if your nets are not great for batting and the bowlers are getting much straight then you aren't going to get very good actual practice in.

What I would say is there are ways to make it better practice, like if it's really bouncy bat miles out of your crease to negate the bounce. It can also help with your reactions and decision making etc...

Also don't ever underestimate the social effect of Indoor nets and seeing everyone again etc....

I like them. But then I haven’t played for a few years and making a return. While the standard is often mixed, in the winter I just want to hit balls and not too fussed about anything else as the surface is so different to April’s green tops anyway. Just enjoy being part of the banter and playing regardless of the type of practice.

Indoor nets are what you make of them really, both personally and as a club - if everyone just rolls their arm over/has a slog then no, it isn't very good practice. Be more intentional and it's great practice.

We also train at a school and so have a similar problem re: bounce. If anything it's poor practice for the bowlers, who are going to be bowling all the wrong lengths come the first game of the season, when a decent ball from winter nets is a long hop and gets spanked.

Like has been said, it mostly depends on who turns up. This year we've had a surprisingly good turnout and so I haven't needed to bowl much (a blessing for all involved), but also the school we train at has quite a few lanes - too many for us. So, we get chance to use one for just throw downs, actually having good practice with a partner. We then bat in pairs when in the bowlers nets for 20 minutes a pair, so probably get about 10 minutes each. It's quite convenient for me, I open the batting and am second choice keeper so need to keep my eye in for the couple of times a year I need to keep. I open the batting with the first choice keeper, so mostly I partner up with him and we can get a decent batting and keeping session in.

This is all very dependent on who turns up though, and I check we have enough bowlers in the nets first. I don't just wander off and do my own thing. And I openly admit I am biased, I'm not a fan of nets indoor or out and would rather have throw downs or targeted practice.

The social side is just as important though, and we always end up in the pub after for a few. This year we have tried a Sunday lunchtime session, and it really helps with the social side of things, people are more likely to stay afterwards compared with training at 8PM on a Thursday for two hours or something.
