The return of teas!?
« on: February 11, 2022, 12:28:24 PM »

Hey guys as I’ve started winter nets it’s got me thinking about the wonderful experiences of cricket teas! Haha!! Just wondering what people’s opinions are on if  teas will make a return this season and if people actually want teas to return? For myself it’s a definite yes I want them to return!

Our teas are optional for the home team to offer if they choose, and then the away team also has the choice to take them up or not if offered.

Personally, as a captain, I'm glad I don't have to worry about organising them every week so glad they're optional - for friendly/tour fixtures I get it and want to see them remain, but the last thing I want in the middle of the league game is a ton of food to be completely honest.

Yeah spot on @Neon Cricket - think people get very attached to the romantic idea of a village cream tea, but how often do you actually get that? Sundays, great. League games they're a waste of time more often than not.

Optional for us and the players have basically said they're not bothered and it's too much hassle trying to get sometime to do them, so we're not having them.

In the past we've been lucky, as we've had a few of the lads Mums provide cracking teas, but the players certainly aren't gonna sort it. When we've been away and it's been left to players of opposing teams its been awful!

As a club we have 4 side and play in 2 2 differnet leagues, we were initially told that the 1sts had to provide teas however now have the option BUT we must provide a tea for scorers and umpires at least

Absolutely spot on. Ditch teas for Saturday league cricket

Quite like my club's proposed arrangement, players from both sides bring their own food (avoids any allergy or cultural issues with what's available) but we provide teas/coffees at the break for any who want one.

Keeps some kind of social element to it, without the cost and hassle of preparing food for 44 players across two matches.

The league has left it up to home sides to opt in or out providing a tea, with away teams able to opt out of a tea when playing somewhere that provides. We have chosen to opt out of providing a tea at home for 2022 (with a view to discussing again next winter if needed), and will most likely only opt in for teas at an away ground if it's known for a decent tea (but clearly with the agreement of the whole team because it might mean an increase in match fee).

We're fortunate at our club that we still have a 'tea lady' (for want of a better shorthand), and so the players haven't had to worry about doing anything for a long time and she is missing doing it (hence discussing again next winter). It's actually a very good standard of tea, but I think everyone has enjoyed bringing their own and being able to eat it whenever they feel like it when not batting. There's still plenty of friendlies and tour games that we provide a tea for.

We will still have the bar open and offer free tea and coffee at tea time, which is still worthwhile.

Yep like alot above the 2 Counties have said Teas are optional for the home side to provide but they must let the away side know by Tuesday if they are providing them.

As a club we have decided to do approx 4 teas out of our 11 home games, these being against sides we know will also do a tea, sides we get on very well with on and off the field and 1 on our President's Day.

Personally I am not bothered either way as a Keeper Opening bat I never eat much at all during the 'tea break' as I am always going out to do something straight away.

Teas mandatory again. Vote was split 50:50 so the rule requiring teas remains

I can see the value in social fixtures but they are completely outdated in league cricket.

No idea if we will have teas this year in Norfolk after the Norfolk Cricket Board managed to spectacularly mess up the "One League" merger meaning there hasn't been a league AGM...

In terms of teas, with no disrespect intended to anybody I do see the constant moaning of the "hassle" of teas as part of the reason why so many clubs are struggling. There are far too many players who claim to be too "busy" to contribute anything more than their sub and the time to play the match itself. Yes it does take quite a few hours to prepare a good tea but in an ideal world a player wouldn't need to do it more than once per season and even in that week the time they spend doing this is dwarfed by the time spent by the volunteers that make up the ground-staff, the committee etc.

I particularly dislike the idea of getting rid of the ~30 min tea break and replacing it with a quick 10 minute break with players eating when their team is batting and they aren't required to score etc. as it removes that social side of the cricket tea completely. A half hour sit down tea with every player bringing their own food is the only compromise I would personally even consider.

I appreciate why captains might want to see it ended as they face the brunt of the "busy" brigade and often have to make teas multiple times a season as a result. But to me it is yet another damning sign of the times.

It’s interesting, if you don’t have teas, how long do you have between innings?

The last couple of seasons, it’s been bring your own and I like that. I prefer it to sitting around for ages with some crappy food.

But

I also open the batting, so it means I might be fielding for 50 overs, then have 15 minutes to get fluids, padded up and out there. It’ll be the same, or worse, if you’re a tai lender and you might have been batting a while (or if you bat through) and you don’t get long to get tested before the second innings.

Yes completely agree, as I gave said I don't mind either way about teas, but the circa 30 mins break between is a must for me. I keep and open the batting, so even if I am not having much tea I still need the time to sit, get refreshed, possibly quickly shower if it's a real hot day and get into a right frame of mind for batting if I have just kept wicket for 50 overs.
