After reading through the thread on the GM player edition breaking and reading the comments on poor quality balls i think it would be helpful to hear suggestions on the best balls to use for indoor nets.

I've seen many brand new bats used at indoor nets, without any issue! But I wouldn't use brand new one indoors. I've decided to use one which is fully prepared and feels it is a right choice.

Agree with this. We're lucky enough to use Dukes match balls, so we have an abundance of decent spares for nets or training. I'm not a fan of people using brand new balls of any quality for training anyway (sorry opening bowlers), so this works out perfectly.

Agreed good quality old league balls, our league uses a Readers ball which by and large seem decent, don�t see many bat breakages throughout the year and they seem to hold shape well and do a bit for most of the game.

I can certainly say Iv seem a few times someone rock up with a new cherry to nets and when I�m batting iv let them bowl with it the once, left the ball no matter what and told them they ain�t using that to bowl to me indoors. Does it make me popular nope lol, but iv only ever had one bat go during indoor nets from my memory.

I've repeatedly told people I won't take guard if they're going to bowl with a crap ball. I understand some may not know what they've got in their hand but for me, if you've been told, it's simple respect for your teammates property not to use bat breakers.

Are there any decent priced reliable balls that aren't rock hard that you can buy from suppliers/online stores that aren't "from the league"

We got some of these for training and midweeks last year, really good quality.

Ive got no problem with new balls being used in nets as long as they aren't cheap rocks. As an opening bat it would be a bit of a shock to walk out on a saturday to face a swinging ball without having practiced against it.

And how are the new ball bowlers supposed to practice?

We use them in the league. Not much of a seam on them and they dont swing for much more than 12 overs. But do hold together well.

Can remember when we used to use the Readers in my younger days and they did plenty for a long time

Faced a few new balls in the nets, bowlers like them as they skid on with pace off the mats.
It�s the height of stupidity� expensive bats against a five quid ball with hard centres.

Apart from that it�s disrespectful to your team mates. The bat breaks in the toe and your left with replacing it a great cost or a repair that probably will not last.

I think if your bat breaks in a game that�s just a hazard we all live with.

Personally I�ve never understood why the combination balls have not caught on for net practice, still a decent weight and little chance of breaking the bat.

A world beating batmaker on a farm in Kent told me the single biggest danger to a grade 1 bat is a poor quality ball.

I use new balls in the nets quite regularly. I do use better quality Readers, Dukes and Tiflex balls though.

The only ones I've tried and chucked away because they were too hard were Warsop red/white training balls I bought when I visited the 'shed'.

Nothing wrong with new balls in nets, indoor nets get a bit dull if the ball does nothing! Those Oxbridge seconds are what I buy personally, usually you get Windsors which are very good quality and keep a shine for a long time.

So long as it's a waxed rather than lacquered ball I'm happy, have definitely refused to face SD specials before!
