Maybe a Neon
« on: March 24, 2022, 03:27:50 PM »

I recently acquired the bat below.  The seller had no knowledge of it’s history but it did have a Neon sticker on the handle.  The toe had been battered but wasn’t as bat as the photos so made a PVA paste and gradually filled it up and shaped it with a mold I prepared.  Took it to the nets on Sunday and it hit really well out of the middle and outer areas.  Pick up was nice.
Question is does anyone know if it could be a neon.  And also the toe has an inlay in which I haven’t seen before can anyone tell me what that’s for and is it something common.
Thanks all!

Hope the pictures work

That toe insert looks like a @Vulcan Cricket special.

It’s called a lamitoe as you insert a harder piece of wood into it to create a laminate.

Helps to prevent a full blown split and prolong the life of the bat as may well be the case here.

I guess it may have worked then!  Thanks for the info!

Hey @playresumes,

Were you not the guy who got the bundle lot of spares or repairs off eBay? (If not, this was in that lot!).

This particular bat is actually my match bat from quite a few years ago - it's a Neon from the Hunts-County-made era. The lamitoe was added after a few seasons due to my ability being very much that of a club cricketer and using the toe more than the middle...

But yes, it's a genuine Neon, albeit from the early years!

Hello,

That’s brilliant to find out it’s back story. Like I said previously I haven’t played for many years but loved the feel of it.  I gave it to a club player to have a go and he was impressed as well.

I did bid on the bundle you were talking about but couldn’t get enough funds together to buy  the lot in the end.  I guess I bought it off the winner!

Anyway thanks for the info!!

I also got the bat with a bulldog sticker on the handle from the guy.  Was that one of yours?

No problem mate, happy to help!

Yeah the Bulldog was in the bundle too, it'd be given as a trade in bat from an offer I did quite a few years back - if I remember rightly the handle/rear splice was in a right state, look to have done a good job with it! 👍🏻

Thanks, yeah it’s come up quite well as it was a mess. I will be interested to see how long it will last but did alright in the nets last week.

Update on the Neon
I was struggling to decide which was going to be my bat to play with (when I finally start again) and always kept coming back to the neon, despite being an older bat there was something about it.  Unfortunately the handle was too thick for me but I couldn’t stop coming back to it.  I finally decided to reduce the thickness for my top hand and square of and angle the toe a bit.  ‘Denis’ (named after my all time favourite footballer) is now ready for action.

Denis Irwin's your favourite footballer? Odd choice but each to their own.

Whether is an old bat or new bat, if it feels good then specs, grains etc doesn't matter one bit. Enjoy it!

Yep since I was a kid.  I would like to think it was because he was such a reliable no nonsense player but it may have been because you used to have to pay for each number and letter individually when you had shirts personalized and his was the one I could afford. My pocket money didn’t stretch to kanchelskis 14.
