Broke my bat :( fixable?
« on: June 20, 2022, 06:43:41 PM »

A very sad weekend for me as my favorite bat decided to let go (pics below)

I've already decided its time to buy a new one but I'm interested in any experienced views on whether this is worth repairing.

If so - any suggestions on who is doing good quality repairs at the moment / anyone fancy taking it on.

No idea what the going rate is on repairs of this type so need to weigh up if I should just put the cost towards the new bat or not.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Easy as fix.
Get in glue in between the cracks and clamp over night. Sand and good to go.

The feathering near the corner is easy to fix - just glue and clamp. The deeper crack would eventually result in a clean break of the triangular piece. I tried fixing those for several team mates and glueing and clamping didn't work. I have seen youtube videos of such cracks repaired by cutting out the damaged section and attaching a new piece with glue and dowel. How durable are those repairs? I don't know. If the bat is amazing, I'd try that approach.

Eventually all bats break. Trying to salvage a terminal bat just wastes time and money. I'd say get a new bat.

@SOULMAN1012 fixed a similar break for me at a very reasonable price.

Grafting a new piece onto the bat should be the very last option. This one looks fine for a glue and clamp and then fibre taping. Like @InternalTraining has mentioned it might eventually break off but I have fixed plenty that have held firm.

This is the repair for @Jimbo on a very similar crack.

I always advise with these type of repairs that it's at the customers risk, with no guarantees. Imo, I'd put the money towards a new bat, as once they start going in various places you're fighting a losing battle in the long run.

It also depends how the rest of the bat is. Is the handle ok? Any cracks in the shoulder ? (You can't always see them  until it's in a vice and you can twist the handle). Is the face getting the point it will soon delaminate etc? These are all points i consider before advising a customer, but ultimately it's their decision once given the advice.

I'm just not comfortable just fixing anything and everything. Just because it can be fixed, doesn't mean it should be imo.

You make a valid point about the rest of the bat and also I would say the value of the original bat as well. If you have spent £100-£150 price point and you need a fairly simple repair like this appears to be and the cost of repair is £30 it’s justified and fair I feel. If you have the same price point and you then need a new handle, refurb etc than maybe not.

I have seen someone this week who last winter sent his Newbery back for a refurb and was charged £90 for a refurb eyes almost fell out my head. Especially on the 5star model he had so half the original cost of the bat for new stickers and scuff basically.

So my point is cost via original investment.

Yep all valid considerations. The bat cost me a tenner originally but I love it so the idea of spending £30 to get a bit more life out of it does not seem bad to me.  To replace like with (second-hand) like would be about £150.  Replacing like with (new) like I think is about £350 so a repair/refurb could be a proper bargain!
