Robert Pack Batmaking Video - some feedback please?
« on: June 21, 2022, 10:51:23 AM »

Hiya folks, hope everyone is well. I have been a bit more active in visiting batmakers recently, and tried to get some videos of their process. Here is a draft of some of the shaping footage I had from my visit to Rob a while back - I've still got a lot more footage like sanding and binding etc, but just wondering what folks thoughts are? Would you like to see it from a different angle maybe for the main camera? I hadn't planned on showing this for a while, but I'll be popping down for a Custom bat prize I won soon, so may as well get some more footage, but rather than the same stuff, some input from others would be good on what works.

Plenty more footage from other makers like B3, H4L and Scott to go through, just not enough time!

"An old Crown handle."

Reference to Crown of Dewsbury, I believe.

What did you intentionally mute?

What did you intentionally mute?

They were discussing about the hidden whereabouts of the much talked-about press?

Sometimes mute when we talk about other makers - nothing malicious was said.

The press is there, and not hidden. You can see it in their own video.

I think I'll probably have to get a microphone nearer Rob to hear him clearer/better. What do folks think of the viewing angle?

The batshaping videos from each batmaker I think will be relatively similar. But the insights they share when doing so are where the value lies for us bat nerds, it'd definitely be worthwhile investing in an external mic which sits either on the batmaker or away from the camera between the two of you for that convo. Then maybe cut some of the "just shaping" parts.

What also would be interesting to know is the different parts of their process and how they differ. For example, Rob Pack here is using 90% machine shaped bats with the handle stuck in later – similar to how the Keeley's work – whereas others I know prefer to shape the bat in full from a cleft with the handle already in situ. Have you noticed much difference when visiting the batmakers?

Very cool @Chad! Agree with what Tom's said, get an external mic - it's the insights/stories that us badgers will want to hear about :D

Thanks for the feedback so far chaps. I guess the point of the purchase of camera, setting up of the channel etc is primarily to educate folks a little more on batmaking - in particular in the UK. I am aware that a lot of the folks who will watch these videos are geeks etc, so your point @Tom about cutting down the video length does make sense, but at the same time, I kind of want folks to see the time and work involved in making their bats. Perhaps what I'll do is put bookmarks where the batmaker offers their insight as opposed to making 2 separate videos, so if people are purely interested in the insight part, they can just skip to the timestamps, and if they're too engulfed in the visuals and miss something said, then they don't miss out on that either.

In terms of differences between batmakers processes, I've seen B3, H4L, Scott, RPC and Keeley. They do have similarities in what they do generally speaking in terms of how they split the batmaking into different stages. In terms of how they achieve each of these stages, it differs, and obviously they have slightly different takes on how the final product is presented.

Follow up question besides any feedback on videography - what kinds of questions do folks like to be covered?
