Played against RIcki Clarke on Saturday....
« on: August 16, 2022, 11:49:23 AM »

So yeah that happened.... He smashed 200 odd not, obviously he's playing well below his standard. Fortunately he didn't need to bowl. His team shrewton are likely to go up otherwise the teams were pretty well matched. Felt a bit for are 17 year old bowler he went for over 100 in 8 overs, just wanted to get people's opinions on this, and what Ricki Clarke himself is getting out of it. The only real issue I have is having a 120 mile round trip knowing you'll more than likely be smashed by a ex county pro.

Didn't really like it when he did this earlier this season either. No issue with him playing for his local club, good on him for getting stuck into club life beyond playing, but it does feel a bit unnecessary racking up double tons.

I know the counter is that he doesn't do it every week and that it's an experience to play against an ex-pro but it's never much fun chasing leather all day and then trying to chase a score that is miles out of reach.

As far as your game goes you would have to question why a 17 year old bowled that many overs even if most of the runs were scored towards the end your captain should of known what was likely to come and pulled him off after 5.

In those situations you put anyone on to bowl apart from the youngster-so I would be asking what the thinking was there.

Personally when I was younger and playing  half decent the pros I played against helped you learn something. Grant flower and Ali stair Campbell both got chanceless tons in the same game and were like machines, Alex Tudor had lots of time for us and is a super bloke.

The only one I would not want to repeat is facing Carlos Remy with a new ball as I did years ago. Very very quick and whilst I knew the helmet would do it’s job I thought I might get hit.

I think his aim is to get the 1s promoted so that they get better cricket and maybe attract other cricketers from nearby clubs who want to play a better standard. Does it really warrant him scoring 200s and is that an ethical thing for an ex-pro to do is another question. There was a post in the Your Season 2022 thread where Aussie BBL start Jack Weathereld scored 170 odd playing in the premier league. At that level, its fair enough. But ex-pro playing in County Division 2 and doing that just seems wrong to me.

@deanoknight I remember playing against Steep a few years back. One thing I remember is that the location matched the name of the club! :D

I played against Rikki earlier in the year.  He hits the ball so hard. I faced his bowling and felt relatively comfortable. But his batting totally destroyed us.

As for him playing, he is playing with some mates and full filing a promise he made to the club.

On a separate note, his cricket academy is amazing. He has done wonders for my son's game.

Which is fair...but still dont think it is ok to score 200s against County Div 2 sides.

It's only fair to mention that he seemed a decent bloke, wasn't at all arrogant. I get the double tons are a bit much. However it would look worse if he retired after 100

You'd imagine he is good enough to be able to knock it about and let others take strike once he's got the ton up, rather than batter a double ton largely in boundaries. That's essentially what the ex-Scotland international in our league has done all season.

I'd say he was farming the strike rather than letting the other batsman have a go.

As much as others have outlined positive motivations for what he's doing, it does all smack a bit of him enjoying being the big fish in a small pond...

I wonder if Surrey made a phone-call. Were down to 11 registered players last week.

Doesn’t need to retire but I’m sure he could of walked past one or picked out a fielder if he felt his team had enough.

Wetherald banged 270 out of 512 where oppos weee bowled out for 179 I saw.

This is what I don't like about it. I actually love the fact he's gone back to club cricket to get stuck in and help out etc....

But he is more than capable of picking out a fielder, walking past one or even just giving the strike away if he really doesn't want to get out.

I am interested to know the times he gets lower scores is he trying to blaze it the ground or genuinely being got out.

The Wetherald situation is completely different as he's a paid cricketer in the Premier league with probably other paid cricketers on the park too.
