Laver and Wood order
« on: April 22, 2023, 03:32:45 PM »

Hi guys,

Hope you’re all keeping well.

I am thinking of ordering a couple of reserves from L&W. M&H just don’t do it for me anymore and for pretty much the same price for one M&H Custom I can get 2 L&W

I love light bats and have chosen weight ranges that L&W have already done in these profiles.

This is what I’ve asked for:

Extended

Middle sweet spot
Rounded facing
Semi Oval handle - trad cane
Higher spine
Happy with much thinner edges to achieve a higher spine with less concaving
2lbs 6-7 oz

This to me is similar to the M&H Distinction I wanted as a youngster. So please use that for reference if possible - I’m not worried about gauge legality. This bat will be for a bit of fun as I wouldn't be able to use it during league cricket - so we can have a bit of fun with the spine height. If I remember the distinction had a spine height of about 69mm. I know that this may not be possible at this weight range but I think this info gives a relatively clear idea of what I'm after.

Classic

Lower end of middle sweet spot - but not mid low
Rounded facing
Semi oval handle - trad cane
Important for spine to run into handle
2lbs 4/5 oz

Basically, just a really traditional, old school cricket bat.

Questions:

Do Lavers still gain weight?
How long do they take to open up?
Will the lower density clefts required for these weights break up and delaminate sooner?
Will they be able to hit these requirements?

All I'd say is that you'll probably have to manage/adjust your expectations on what is possible. 2lb 6-7oz is a ridiculously light weight - the volume of a Distinction is pretty vast - that's how you get the impressive specs, but they do come at heavier weights. I don't recall many being below 2lb 11oz with the 70mm+ spines. Also have to consider the size of clefts Wright's will be sending to Laver...

Yeah 2lbs 6oz is 2lbs 3oz before scuff, binding, grip and stickers. Not easy to do if full and high spine, depending on other factors. Imo 2lbs 6oz is way too light for any adult male in a SH bat, but each to their own. 2lbs 4oz is really pushing it! 😆

What are your expectations on edge size, toe size, shoulder thickness, spine into the handle etc? Also, what size handle, thick, medium, thin?

Hi Chad,

Totally understand that! The distinction was a beast. It was more so just a similar sort of profile, rather than an absolute carbon copy. Basically just their extended profile but with a higher spine,  thinner edges and minimal bowing.

All the best

I'll be honest and say in all liklihood, you'll probably not be too happy with it. If you really want a proper distinction, go for the 2lb 11-2lb 14 range. Here's one I had custom make from an oversized cleft by @Perkins17 - it's 3lb with a double thick chevron, and has a 77mm spine and 33mm edge. If you want a bit of fun and nostalgia, don't be afraid to go a bit heavier

From my limited experience be prepared to play them in for quite a while until they really open up. Also every chance they will pick up a bit of weight in our conditions vs the NZ conditions. Seems to have been quite common on here at least for their weights to increase a bit once the arrive on our shores.

Last Laver and wood I purchased hasnt picked any weight up in over 5 years. Pretty sure they will confirm they have sorted.

James Laver is one of the most knowledgeable bat makers around. I would send all these questions to him directly!! He’s always had good insight.

From my experience- laver bats no longer gain weight. I live in North America, and what I typically do is order my lavers when it’s cold and wet in NZ. They then tend to lose a bit of weight after arriving. In my experience, the bats they’ve sent over have been heavier than requested but have lost weight over time to come down to spec.

Don’t worry about this “opening up” nonsense. Laver bats feel hard when you bounce a ball on them - but when you use them outside, you’ll see how far the ball travels off the bat. Ignore the feel - just enjoy them. I have never hit the ball further with any other brand…yet laver will always feel a little strange if you just bounce a ball on it at home.
