I'll be gracious in defeat. Well played Australia. That declaration looks poor now.

Declaration was fine, if you'd taken all your chances you would've won.

The declaration gave us a chance

They were 8 down

24 no balls in the game was criminal

Do t think the declaration cost us but missed chances did.

Kuwajah was brilliant and deserved to be on the winning side. Fantastic temperament and skill

This Test match was as good as it gets. Absolute nail biter! Benji didn't do anything wrong with the declaration, he setup the match beautifully.

There is nothing like Test cricket.

Suppose it depends on how you look at it. Most will blame the chances because they don't want to lay any blame at Stokes door,  so more likely to blame Bairstow. I love how attacking Stokes is but he gambled with the declaration when he had Root in on 120 not out. It didn't pay off. Saying they were 8 down and we wouldn't have had time to bowl them out without the declaration doesn't really wash, as we lost two full sessions to rain and I'm sure that wasn't on Stokes mind when he declared.

Not saying the missed chances didn't cost us, they were a big factor but they weren't the only factors. We could have scored another 40 or 50 1st  innings, gave away cheap wickets and should have posted over 300 in the second dig. Also failed to mop up the tail at the end, which we should be able to do really.

All that said, great entertainment and Australia batted very well at the death there.

Great test match. I think we can post some bigger totals and put them- the Aussies under even more pressure. We managed to take 18 wickets when I thought some of our bowlers like Robbo and Anderson looked short on fitness and somewhat unthreatening. Feels a bit like an opportunity missed to me but fair play to the Aussies, they fought really hard and showed some big balls at the end.
A bit of a break now for us to regroup and recover those tired bodies. Will be interesting to see if we make any changes.

Lots of variables in there - declarations, chances, new ball decisions etc.

We never really know.

The two that stand out for me are Bairstow missing Green.  That probably made a 50 run difference.  And Root bowling one over too many, which cost 14 and gave the Aussies momentum.

The problem with Bazball is, we have said we will make all the running.  We'll attack endlessly and give chances as we do it.  Australia will be hard nosed and keep taking...

Probably why someone hadn't already come up with the idea?

Big stand out for me was Bairstow dropping Uzzie in the second innings early.
His keeping was not his best in this game. Priced in or not it was the difference.

But the cricketing gods will reward England for making all the running over time.

Didn't mind the declaration at the time, sticking them in under lights was a gamble but one with a high payoff if it worked. Would point the finger at 6 of the top 8 getting starts but not making 50 in the second innnings well ahead of the declaration.

Bairstow and Moeen selections were sadly predictable in results, although with Bairstow you'd hope his keeping will be better for the game time. We need to get Wood in the side, and more importantly make a few less mistakes.

What a game though!

Agree, @Buzz. Will be fascinating to see if the bring in change (even if forced through fitness levels) or doggedly stick with this squad.
