The long awaited D3O Groin Guard 2.0
« on: July 07, 2023, 08:28:48 PM »

Some of you may follow my social media channels and have seen snippets of what I’ve drop fed onto there regarding the new revised D3O groin guard.

Long story short(ish) I had a batch of about 200 a few years back that D3O asked me to take to market, these sold really quickly with the last 10 heading to the England camp. Having sold them all I chased up fresh stock, this took time and the eventual answer that came back was that they couldn’t offer them due to the reject rate and huge MOQ.

In the background CA carried out a research project (due to some nasty incidents from impacts) into the groin guard with lab testing and the D3O model being 1 of 5 that they found performed well and was close to passing the BS safety standard, as such I was asked if I’d be interested in doing further work to amend the design to get it through testing so it could be certified and offered/recommended to players.

Making the cup deeper was a key factor as the currently marketed models “bottomed out” under impact making contact with the force plate. New tools have been created and a D3O module integrated inside the cup to absorb the impact of hit.

Today I finally signed off on samples to begin the first production run!

How much are they likely to be?

That’s interesting and quite scary about the CA research project. I got hit in the box once and it cracked,l (was given out LBW and hobbled off!)so I considered myself quite fortunate there was no damage to myself… Really good idea this Tom

As a left hander who opens myself up a fair bit - I get hit in the unmentionables a fair bit!

Can attest to the fact it still feels bloody uncomfortable even with a box!

Yes it’s an area and product we never really think about or invest in, someone at our club once got hit and pinched between the plastic. Hence introducing the D3O module to help with impact absorption and also to add a softer layer between the plastic cup and genitals should it split/crack.

Price wise I still need to crunch numbers on freight costs to give me a bottom line cost but it’ll be in the £40 region, which I appreciate maybe more than currently sold options that don’t pass testing, but how often do you replace it?

Given the severity of injuries on the Pro circuit (eg 70% of the England team currently wear 2 boxes!) id defo invest in something to give me and my balls the best protection available. After all you only get one set.

A friend, ex Scotland captain, tells a great story about when he was hit there by Shoaib Akhtar. His box cracked, pinched flesh and when he looked down there was blood everywhere... Then a huge uproar of laughter!!!! So yes, an overlooked area where better engineered products probably are required.

Yep not nice, even worse that these types of incidents have led to players needing a testicle removed as a result of being hit. Makes you wince just think of about it.

Interesting about the testing. I've used the Aero box and it feels pretty solid, but without the D30 obviously. I take it from the abv this wouldn't be up to scratch?

They were 1 of the others that were recommended but still not deep enough.

22 male models and 2 female ones were tested nothing passed.

I got one of the original @Ayrtek Cricket  D3O box's and its excellent.

I'd been hit quite a few times using an old style box and always felt like i'd might as well not have bothered wearing one as you get the pain anyway.

I've been hit using the D3O one and haven't felt anything, I use mine for Muay Thai as well. Took loads of impacts from kicks and knees and it never lets me down.

Always wished i'd bought 2 so i didn't have to remember to swap it out of my kit bags so i'll defo take one of the new ones Tom

Yeh hoping to appeal to other sports outside of cricket that require them too given the volumes needed as an MOQ 😆

I've got one of the OG versions and it's still going strong after however many years of use - well worth the cost
