Is this out?

Watch 30 secs into the video please. This was at a youth game in Seattle. The batter who got out is one of the better 12 year olds going around here. He was outside the line where the wicket was broken.

Seems out…any reason it would not be?

Yeah we felt the kid was baited out. he was trying to farm the strike with tailenders with him. Looks like the opposition planned to get him out this way :-(
I agree he is indeed out. We ended up losing by 1 run.

When I initially posted I was under the impression the bowler cannot stop once he's in the delivery stride. But apparently the rule says he cannot stop once he's at highest point of rotation.
Adam Zampa's attempt shows why the non striker was not out.

Looks out to me.  Correctly executed by the bowler.

Being out of your ground is a chink in your armour, just like hitting in the air through cover or nicking outside of off.  I have no problem with bowling sides exploiting the batter's weaknesses to try to get them out.

The good thing is that this is the easiest weakness to eliminate from your game.  It doesn't require talent, countless hours of practice, or expert coaching.  Pretty sure the batter (and hopefully the teammates) won't be making the same mistake again.

Having said that, in a kid's match I'm still of the opinion that a prior warning would be the right thing to do (even though it's not required by the rules), as some kids aren't aware they can be out in such a way, and educating the kids should be a bigger priority than winning.  In this case, judging by the attempt to get back in, the batter clearly knew they should have been in their ground.

Bet it caused quite a stir a the time though :)

The MCC changed the wording of the rule after the Zampa attempt.  According to how the rule was written at the time, many people (including myself) though it should have been out, but the umpires had been instructed to interpret the wording differently.  The new wording has supposedly cleared that up.

That video is a bit sad/cringe to watch. They seem happy for their victory though so good for them.

Personally I don't care for the warning - all these kids are aware of the rules, but was disappointed the player was baited into leaving the crease. But he was clearly out.
You bet he'll be more careful.

Not really - we are a little old school  :) We try to teach the kids to accept the decision and move on. Same goes for parents.

thats out.

The celebration makes it bitter/sweet/cringe. However I think it has a lot to do with it being US as well- cultural thing.

I found that the kids in US (migrants in bigger cities NY/Seattle/SanFran) are hyper focused and have a lot more pressure to perform in every field (compared to Australia/UK)- regularly saw kids being tutored chess in library or studying in restaurants while their parents ate at the next table (never seen that ever in Australia/SE asia)

What have you all experienced? Is it similar in UK etc now a days?

Oh I see it now.

So much for cricket being a gentlemans gameha!

Stay in your crease and dont back up until moment of release is the lesson here.  It how I was taught growing up but game has changed a lot since then lol.

Agree the squeaky celebration is cringe. What a way to win a game

Learn the lesson and ensure your team plays to the values you live by. Enjoyment is key

IMO the west coast kids (Seattle/California) are a definitely less intense in cricket (not sure about other sports) compared to say NY/NJ, Atlanta or Texas. Definitely less chatter, and less of the win at all costs mentality.
Having said that, US is in some ways a land of extremes. I'm involved in youth cricket - I've witnessed some amazing acts of sportsmanship and some really crappy plays (like the one above for which I blame the coaches/parents).

My fellow Americans!

Youth sport is way, way, way more intense here than anywhere I've been before. I train at a multi-purpose sports field and I've seen baseball, rugby, soccer, and American football trained for here. Even the most of junior of groups have really punishing sessions with aggro coaches. It is really intense. I'm gonna argue that the video reminds me of baseball culture, which even at the junior level is unbelievably cutthroat.

Junior sport here is just totally on a different level to the UK, in my experience. It is wild out here, for real. I think I see that in that video, maybe.

Agreed that Americans certainly are more exiteable than us.  I wouldn't be surprised if they celebrated every wicket 10x more than what we do over here, so perhaps that particular wicket is just a 'run of the mill' celebration for them?
