'Bat Fitting'
« on: August 29, 2023, 09:20:59 PM »

Hi
Just wondered if bat fitting sessions were a thing at all? Similar in the way that you would go and get fitted for golf clubs does any manufacturer offer a service where they will give you a few different options to have a swing of and watch you with them to make recommendations?
I'm looking to get a new bat made during the off season but not sure what to actually choose. I've always gravitated towards heavier side of bats with a low middle as I think I prefer them and the ball stays abit lower up in the North of England.......there's no other rhyme or reason to this thinking though other than what I've thought up in my own head.
I'm happy spending decent money on a bat but really want to make sure that what I order is the best fit for me as I reckon I'm heading into my final couple of season in a short lived comeback so want to make the most of it.
Cheers :)

Oh also at the moment I am gravitating to a H4L for no other reason than the fact that they have a good reputation  I have their pads, gloves and bag and like to match but this isn't a 'must'

Any batmaker should offer something of a bat fitting, but ultimately for me it will come down to the individual and what suits their eye & feel. A lot is made of certain profiles for hard pitches, low bouncing pitches, front foot play, back foot play etc etc. But for me, there's no point someone telling you you need a low middle because you play on low bouncing pitches, if you don't like the look or feel of a low middle bat.

In my experience of making bats and having people visit the workshop, people are confused when they come in and often have something which they've read about online in their head. Yet once you show them that and they feel it, they move to something else. Not always, but my point is you're the one using it and so you have to be happy with it. If you're not, you'll never be confident with it and won't enjoy using it.

Visit some shops, or select a few batmakers you'd like to potentially buy from and visit them. Talk about options, handle shape etc and get something made you're 100% invested in. Then use it and don't overthink it!

There are a few makers/shops out there with nets that you can have a try before you buy, but it isn't very common.

Always thought your physical attributes and batting style make a much bigger difference to where you hit the ball than the pitches do - if you're 5 foot 2 and mainly score off the back foot then the pitch can be as low as you like but you're probably still making contact higher up the blade.
