Interminable t20 competitions.
« on: January 12, 2024, 10:44:22 AM »

At what point do fans go I am not interested with this t20 merry-go-round?
The IPL goes on for months, the Big bash goes on for months.
Then we have the SA20 which appears to be more important than test cricket.
At least the 100 is done in less than 4 weeks. Although we do have the blast too.
And I haven't mentioned the Pakistan t20 league or the Windies Comp.
Plus now we have IPL owners wanting to buy counties.

At what point does the consumer/fan say, this is garbage.
I have no interest in seeing Alex Hales slog 32 of 24 balls

I actively turn the cricket off now as it is boring. How can I encourage my kids to watch and love the game, when I am not interested?

I know Eng have 17 tests this year.
That is also insane.

A test match should be an event. Not a trudge from ground to ground.

How much is too much?! Because I am well past that with hit and giggle stuff.

@Buzz I couldn't agree more. I don't think that T20 cricket should be played at the international level. There is far too much T20 cricket now and we all love cricket. Watching the Big Bash it doesn't look like the competition is that popular live. The grounds didn't seem that full.

Well said, Sir.

I think the bubble will burst eventually, all these minor leagues are propped up with gambling money and it won't last forever.

Have to say I do enjoy the BBL, good quality without the ludicrous money and influence of the IPL, plus because the money isn't as mad you get a real breadth of people playing.

Oh gosh, could not agree more. At least in football the players have just 1 team they appear for at any one time. Every league bar the IPL seems to have a variation on the theme of Alex Hales and Imran Tahir playing each other in assorted shirts designed by a toddler with a pack of highlighters.

As a Worcestershire fan, one of the best things about our T20 win a couple of years back was that almost all of the squad was homegrown talent. I could get behind supporting the team because the players had some kind of connection to it. But now we also have a selection of randomly hired sloggers and overpaid all rounders.

T20 is the future of all cricket weather you agree with this or not.

It will creep into Saturday League Cricket as time will dictate which way the game goes

I think there's nothing particularly wrong with T20, but the unique problem cricket has is the staggered seasons around the world making the T20 league calendar pretty much 12 months long. It's easy to lose interest when it's the same players (and increasingly the same teams) all shuffled round in a new kit every month. Some kind of regulation will be needed eventually, but what can you do without running into employment law?

T20 at international level is really important I think, in an increasingly league dominated world it's useful to show that international is still the top level. Doesn't help if the ICC gets greedy and has a tournament every 12 months though.

Some mention after we were  so poor at the one day WC the players did not play enough 50 over cricket leading up to the tournament. Yet our players looked burned out very early on.

You suspect one format will give way, guess the 50 over comp as it’s virtually a second 11 county game now with no real backing as the funds plough into the 100.

It would take the ICC to change format but it’s hard to see anything else other than 50 overs dying out in the not too distant future.

I have to confess to be really enjoying the SA20- could be the match timings , decent Squads (4 overseas allowed) but watched many of the games so far compared to none in BBL. Grounds pretty full and lots of families watching. It also helps it doesn’t go on for 6 months like both the IPL and BBL feel like they do.

I will always prefer test and championship county cricket but shows the impact a well run T20 tournament can have . Just shame in England we have the continued farce of the 100 and the Blast which the ECB and SKY clearly don’t like.

Nothing to confess, I think this is probably the correct answer...

I agree that I am bored of all white ball cricket now. And have been for years.
I just wish here in the UK the T20 / 100 season was April-May or September-October.
If it’s entry level cricket entertainment to get a new audience into cricket each year then it makes sense to watch it first? Or as a summer festival event last.
Sitting in the cold isn’t so bad watching a t20 or t10 compared to 90 overs of red ball cricket.
And for god sake can we get it on national tv at least to inspire youngsters or offer an alternative to just football. In my experience if something is free you’d be surprised how popular it can be. BBC4 isn’t even a working channel in daytime so it might as well do offer something.
A month of T10 or T15 before the first England test would probably get the nations juices flowing for supporting England more all summer. And kids might feel encouraged to join a local club in April too. Which is surely what it’s all about at the end of the day.

Sadly, people who think like this are in the minority. The game has expanded beyond traditional cricket lovers who are filling stadiums at these events. I am afraid the game is slowly shifting in the direction where franchise cricket will rule and test cricket will become somewhat of a rarity. Time is of course a major factor in this change. A T20 match is done within a few hours and doesnt take up the entire day, let alone 5 days.
