In the professional game, who now yields the biggest (heaviest) bats in the mens (and separately, in the womens) game? In the past, it used to be Tendulkar, Gayle, Sehwag, and prob of previous eras IVA Richards, Botham, Clive Lloyd I guess. What weights were their match bats, and would those bats fit through the modern bat guage? It would be interesting to know from the podshavers on the forum what are the heaviest "legal" bats they've been asked to make, and how easy that was to source the willow / balance the bat, etc.

What are the heaviest bats that CBF members own/are wielding in anger?

Heaviest iv been asked to make was 3lb 2oz wasn�t to difficult really as just put a handle in it lol. Yes it fitted through the gauge just

@SOULMAN1012 - Any photos of that beast? Sounds quite imposing! What type of shape was it (presume mid middle, no concaving, full spine into toe)?

To all those batmakers who produce sticks for pros, what's the heaviest you have made?

Heaviest custom order I've ever made was 4lb 7oz.....

Heaviest bat that I've made for pro that is actually match used...

2-11.

OK, not so shocking, but it's my lads bat that he started using when he was 13 and was finally tall enough for a full sized bat.

The funny thing is I was always really careful to not buy him a bat that was too big or heavy for him to handle comfortably. We went to the bat maker who had made all his junior bats (Warrior cricket in Wakefield), and Ian had good number of finished and unfinished bats. So my son was told to try as many as he wanted to do whilst I had a chat, and see what he came back with. He came back with a bat he said he really liked, but wanted it a bit heavier. Ian said it was 2-13

We agreed the final bat would come in at 2-11 (although there was a little confusion which led to the first version actually coming in at 2-13 and I had to wrestle it away from Ollie for weight loss surgery

)

It's always interesting when there are bat weight conversations. I know there are people on here that simply think a 2-11 is too heavy for a 13 year old, and I respect their opinion. With a very small sample size of personal experience I've come to the view that if you are going to use a "heavy" bat, then the balance becomes critical. With a lighter bat your personal power will be able to overcome any minor imbalances more easily. With a heavy bat it gets magnified. Ollies bats have always had thick handles- which obviously adds weight, but at the top. Coaches with no knowledge of Ollie or his bats have commented over the years about how light his bats are for him!

@thebigginge - thanks for those amazing insights to the pro bats - really interesting. Presume the Warner bats were before gauge (BG) days (out of interest, roughly what were the edge size and spine height on those 2:14/2:15 monsters? I won't even ask about the 4:7 bat (GN Godzilla??).....

Was Joe Root's bat post-BG, if so was it a complete gauge-filler with no concaving?

Looks like Monty (bless him!) had all the tools he would have needed to compete with the Burnley Lara, something missing though.... BTW, are the bowlers you sponsor very fussy with their bat specs or do they just pick up whatever feels good to the hand and not bother about spec (are they MORE fussy than the batters??)?

Great to hear more insghts....BTW loved the eariler Q&A sess and the Wisden/GN interview series. Keep up the good work, can't weait to see what the next retro range will be for '25!

Think Tendulkar used a heavy bat from an early age, prob passdown full size plank, then as he got bigger, it was comfortable enough for him to go 3lb+ easily. I guess as long as it doesn't affect stroke form or cause muscular strain, and it feels comfortable (top loading weight with grips/hockey tape, counterbalance handles, etc) then weight is just a number I guess...

Tendulkar I believe used his older brother's hand me down bat which was why it was so comparatively heavy.

Not shocked Munsey uses a big bat @thebigginge, he's an absolute unit. Astonished Monty used that big a bat though!

Monty has no clue what his bat weighed, he came to us with a template he liked and didn't know the dead weight!

The DW ones were BG 🤣🤣🤣 and the edges were easily 50mm and spines 75mm but we're super super dry, we cut a broken one up and struggled to get any real mositure readings on the timber.

The root ones were nothing spectacular, there shape would be a fairly standard Indian pro shape, but I've repaired bats for him from 2.7-2.13, he just goes on how it feels in his hands...
