Specs/Info:

  • Weight - 2lb 8.7oz
  • Spine - 60-61mm
  • Edge - 33-34mm
  • Shoulders - 12-13mm
  • Splice - 34.5mm
  • Toe Edge - 18mm
  • Toe Centre - 25mm
  • Face Camber - Semi-Rounded -  4mm
  • Bow - Moderate
  • Handle - Lovely medium-thick oval handle
  • Concaving - Grooved in the flanks, and convex in the central 50mm
  • Width - 107mm front and back
  • Price - �190 RRP, �150 is a pretty typical price to find them at
  • Finish - Natural with a branded toe guard
  • Toe shape - Semi-Rounded


[/size]This particular Ridgeback has 6 wide grains, with some heartwood on the LH outside edge. This particular one was picked out for me from Talent Cricket a long while back, and bouncing a ball on it, it feels pretty springy and responsive, but a touch soft. It will need probably about 2-3 hours of prep work with the mallet. (As much as I love that they've included a preparation handbook, I do think 6 hours is a bit overkill) The Probe is the entry grade offering - in line with the 6.1 grade, and you'd say this one is quite a clean looking blade, and G3 wouldn't be too harsh or generous. However if it was upgraded to a Ridgeback 2000 - you'd probably feel like you'd been short changed with a £110 bump in RRP. (The 2000 is G3 and has an RRP of £300)

Pick up wise - well, anything at that weight will feel light for me! The medium-thick oval handle really does help enhance the feel of the bat in your hands, and the Octopus grip will be aiding in the thickness department. It does feel like there's a bit of weight towards the toe, but nothing too drastic or surprising, given the way the wood has been distributed. That mid-low swell is really an excellent position for a good number of players, and coupled with the oval handle will appeal to many who really like to meet the ball on the front foot and drive, especially on the lower bounce wickets we have in the UK. The handle has a sticker on it with 'Rajkumar', and underneath that one it seems like it has a sticker with 'yellow' printed. Who knows what that means.


Shape wise, the Ridgeback has that sort of iconic feel to me, it feels almost like a predecessor of my 2nd ever bat - the Genesis Tornado (G2 offering, which was subsequently named Whirlwind the following season). The stickers also really what drew me in, I think the first time I saw them was during the Bushfire relief match. The green, gold and red with the big white Kookaburra just give me the Australian retro feel - and brings me back to over a decade ago when I would spend hours watching footage from Robelinda2's channel. (RIP Channel) The finishing of the bat is... It's okay, acceptable I guess for mass produced retail bats. It's certainly not poor, but obviously not quite up to the standards of most boutique makers here. The green, red and gold grip really does seem to complete the look as a whole of the bat.


All in all, I've been pretty happy with this Ridgeback Probe - Kookaburra have definitely invested the time and put in good effort to make sure that their retros are a very good offering. The ridges are pretty much spot on, the modernisation of the shape has definitely kept the identity of the old Ridgeback, while offering a slightly more attractive profile size wise to the consumers. I think maybe for the first time, I feel they've done retros better than Gray Nicolls this year  :o  The one thing I wish that the companies doing retros would adopt though is the traditional round face - but with the obsession with edge size, sadly we may not see much of that!

Hopefully I've not missed anything, and please do ask questions if you have any, or just point out if I'm just writing a whole load of dross etc. You'll save my time, and save anyone else's time spent on reading my drivel :)

Great reviews and a nice-looking bat there. Thanks for doing them! Always had a soft spot for the Ridgeback, since the early days, and am impressed that Kookaburra brought back a shape that is a bit different to the norm. But would you say that the ridges are toned down from earlier versions, or is that just my impression (probably from bigger edges)?

@Chad Great review, as always. Funnily enough 6 hours is normally the rough amount of knocking in that I do on my bats. However, you do have an abundance of bats so I can understand that 2-3 hours is enough for you with a LV Mallet. 

I enjoyed the video review from Serious Cricket on the GN, GM and Kook ranges for 2024.

Thanks @billyb - I hope you're finding more time to play cricket and more appreciative clubs over there! :) Rob @Six Sixes Cricket had some really nice ones - but they are a little pricey! It's a shame they didn't do the full carbon backing, but understand it's technically 'illegal'. Actually on my bucketlist to try replicate a proper carbon backed one! (Also on my list to try get a Kahuna Warrior at some point!)

I think you're right, the Ridge isn't quite nearly as extreme now - and the UK and Aus versions did differ...

If professional services actually knocked for 6 hours - they'd be severely undercharging. Unfortunately, some of them are severely overcharging, and not even doing the knocking. (Stories of bats arriving in their shrink wrapping etc)

Think the teardrop version was the 2nd gen version from the 1990s. The original 1st gen was essentially a rival to the GN Dynadrive with the twin scoops (both of which I would have loved to have got my hands on as a kid in the 80s/90s, ended up being given a GN powerspot in 1990 which was WAY too big and heavy for a kid - still have it knocking around somewhere....).

There is a good pic of a Ridgeback collection on the Kooka Aus/NZ instagram account ( https://www.instagram.com/p/CsF2CP9vFB9/?next=%2Fp%2FCvFGf04snYg%2F&hl=es&img_index=2 ) which compares to the UK 2024 version (think thaty one also came out a cou[ple of years back Down Under - think Maxwell might have wielded that one as well, like the current 23/24 Oz version which has the teardrop design - don't think that modern teardrop is available in the UK currently?).

The 1st gen double scoop Ridgeback always reminds me of Graham Thorpe in his prime, with his one legged pull shot being an iconic image from my childhood (hope Thorpey is doing well after having been taken ill 2 yrs back). The teardrop 2nd gen reminds me of Ponting, and his iconic swivel front foot pull shot, before he massacred bowling attacks with his short-lived graphite stickered Kahuna (which nicely links to the 24 retro Kahuna with the black sticker - not graphite - version :D )

Had been looking for reasonably priced 1990s versions of the GN Dynadrive and the twin scoop Ridgeback for a while - think the Dynadrive seems to pop up more commonly than the original Ridgeback (at least in a half decent state at a reasonable price!), so chuffed that Kookaburra released the twin scoop version here in the UK for the 24 season :D !

Would love to get hold of one of the 24 edition of the Ridgeback and compare to an original 1st gen - I unfortunately have neither! :( (I did end up getting a retro dynadrive from the 90s, as well as one of the reworked editions from about 10yrs ago - the original in my opinion is SOOOO much better in terms of pickup and response was out of this world! So much so, I've been rocking an original Xiphos which was similar in many ways but more meat in the business end than the Dynadrive, until I end up retiring it once I've got my H4L match-fit which I recently got from @Jimbo from here!  :D )

They only had the higher grade in so I’ve picked up a probe from Talent,
And they were excellent as always.
I have been really impressed with kooks offerings full stop the last few years and this goes in my FKW bag with a Buttler shape, a Marnus shape, two kahunas & a kahuna lite
