Hi all,

I committed to buying my son some decent softs for Christmas 18 months ago.

He has just told me that he has worn through the leather on the thumb or palm of the batting gloves. I haven't seen them yet, but assuming there is a small hole it sounds like the kind of thing that will get worse quickly and needs sorting.

First question: Is 18 months a normal amount of time for the gloves/palms to last? It doesn't feel very long, but they have done a very full season last year, and a pretty full winter as well- so I'm not sure. With hindsight, maybe a cheaper pair of "net" gloves would have been a plan.

So next steps:

Can batting gloves be refaced? I know keeping gloves can be. If the answer is yes, does anyone know who/where? I'm in Lancashire if that matters but I'm assuming they will be going by post to somewhere. Again, if the answer is yes- how much is this service likely to cost? Given the gloves were �70 (I think that's expensive), it still feels like someone would have to do a really cheap repair to stop it being financially more sensible to simply throw them away and buy new ones. Even as I type this, I'm wondering about patching the leather or similar.

I'm almost certainly buying him a new pair anyway, as I doubt I will be able to get them repaired between matches so he's going to need another pair.

I don't know anywhere or anyone who will replace palms.

As with all things, it's not time which determines how long things should last, it's how much use. I wouldn't say it's unusual at all after 18 months of use to see wear, as I would assume that's a few games a wk, plus nets etc. it's the and same with bats, think of them lasting an expected amount or runs/hits rather than time.

Some people wear through gloves quicker due to grip pressure and how they hold the bat too. Lad at my clubs wears through grips and gloves more than anyone I've known.

Also, I appreciate 70 isn't pocket change, but its certainly not expensive in today's market for high end softs.

I think they have had some hard usage- he played a lot of cricket last year and a very full off season.

He's said he's really happy with them and I'll just have to add another �5 per month to the cricket fund and replace them! I could genuinely buy a car with that cricket fund.

Yeah like Johnny says, I wouldn't be surprised with this unfortunately - if they're used a lot then he's done well to get 18 months out of them really. I know of players going through 2/3 pairs a season easily, a lot comes down to how much you sweat (and if you actually bat for more than 12 balls on a Saturday

)
