Butterfly bats
« on: July 02, 2024, 10:35:38 AM »

I've been told that butterfly bats give amazing performace for the price, despite looks. I could do with all the help I can get  :D, and was keen to try a butterfly bat in a tendulkar type profile (I prefer v low middle bats as predominantly play on pitches that dont bounce much and therefore mainly front foot player). One player I played against had an ugly bat, but boy did it go and sound like a gunshot when he hit it.

Keen not to spend too much, but wondered where/who might be best to try who have butterfly bats/clefts in stock. Also, is it best the butterfly stain/bar is in the middle of the bat (where hopefully the ball mainly hits!! :D), or does it not make much difference where on the blade the stain is as it is more to do with the whole cleft itself than just the stain area?

Sorry if these are basic questions, trying to improve my limited cricket bat knowledge from you guys!

Robinsons do the best Tendulkar shape IMO and have a Butterfly grade. Just make sure it's a good weight, ie. 2.11+ so you get good volume in it. Butterfly tends to be a bit heavier due to the added density of the stain. In terms of performance for price, they can perform very well indeed, but some can be absolute planks. Given the pricing, your best bet normally is to look through shops if you can and find a low graded stock bat. I think maybe about 10 years ago, it was pretty common to get a Butterfly grade bat for around the £125 mark, but with costs going up etc, £200-£250 is a pretty standard starting price point for a custom Butterfly these days. It's not extortionate, but not quite as cheap and cheerful as they once were.

Purely from my own experience, you don't want too heavy a stain or tiger bar above the sweetspot - have found this seems to cause detriment to the playability higher up the blade. Right on or below the middle will tend to be yield good results, and the nicest ones I've used have had a stain in the back right where the swell is. Seems just to help strengthen the blade overall. They also tend to last a bit longer generally, probably cause the stain retains a bit more moisture. I wouldn't say superior to standard non-butterfly clefts, but they're certainly not inferior bits of wood.

Thanks @Chad, that's really helpful and good to have your experience with butterflies.

Do any UK retailers stock Robinsons bats or do you have to go direct to manufacturer for these types of bats?

For a custom shape RS I would just contact Robinsons directly. Believe you can get them on WhatsApp but don't recall where I got the contact info.

I'd second this. There's a lot made of it, but like anything it's just talk generally to help sell bats people want to sell. If you have a good supply of Butterfly willow which you can access cheap, why would you not sing it's praises to anyone who will listen??!

I'm reality, it doesn't perform better than any other grade. If it did, everyone would use it. Planks can be Grade 1+++ pro or Butterfly. Absolute canons can be Grade 1+++ pro or Butterfly. There's so much more to a bat than just the grade. Stick a rubbish handle in a well pressed Butterfly and it won't last & won't perform as well as one with a good handle in. Don't balance a G1 well and it went feel as nice as a well balanced G4. Etc etc

I'm not sure Butterfly bats are as good value as they used to be with you many good lower end options available now

Thanks for the info, very helpful from the knowledgable forum for relative newbies like me! :D

I'll have a look for a lower grade, not necessarily butterfly, in the Tendulkar shape and see if I can unearth any gems!

I have two butterfly bats, heavily stained with the odd tiger bars, doesn't make an iota of difference, personally I LOVE the look. I was more interested in the fact that the clefts had nice straight and evenly spaced grains (9 - 11) including through the toe area. My club mates have been impressed with performance and have now also started to purchase similar bats.

More importantly, the bat maker I use is very experienced, presses his own bats and even makes his own handles, and was able to offer me a very keenly priced custom specified and made bat in a short turnaround time. I could not recommend Trevor at Mangled Bats in Easingwold, Yorkshire, highly enough, great guy and great product.
