Two Tier Test system

What are people's thoughts on this two tier system being proposed?

To me it stinks of greed from the big three, esp India, to secure all the money in the Test crickt structure, at the cost to WI, Ban, Afg Zim and Ire. Test cricket esp in WI will die, their top talent will go for the franchise route to make their money and name. Feel disappointed for Ban and to some extent Afg, as they have not done much wrong. With less money coming to these boards, the lower tiers in their countries will fade.

And who wants to see the Ashes being fought over twice every 3 years? And likewise Aus/Ind and Eng/Ind? This all smacks of trying to shore up all the money into these boards only.

They obviously couldn't consider a promotion-relegation system in case one of the big three gets relegated (imagine Ind having to be relegated and play in the lower tier against Zim and Ire annually!!

I reckon if they want to keep Test cricket and domestic first class cricket developing, then pool all the monies from the bilateral series, and share out, with a larger proportion than prob the 5% they will currently recieve, going to the lower tier to encourage development. This will obviously NEVER happen, as most of the money in world cricket will end up in India through this and the IPL and the IPL run clones.

Should someone put a new advert in the papers announcing the death of global Test cricket?

I reckon Jay Shah is going to mess things up good for world cricket, like his interference in SLC previously, just my personal tuppence.

I entirely agree with you

I think the majority of us certainly follow & care about Test cricket.
Terrestrial TV and cheaper accessible tickets would be my priority. This potential tier system is divisive not inclusive!

For me test cricket is the pinnacle format of the game. I’m so bored of white ball cricket that each year I switch off more & more from it.
So much so, that I dont even follow the world cups anymore until semis. Same game, different kit.

But Test cricket I look forward to. Ive loved following SA v Pak series And Aus v Ind series. One I can watch in the day on TV and the other I can listen to at night. Its marvellous!
Im gutted England arent busy with a test match every month all year round. It feels like waiting for a heavyweight boxing fight all the time.

I personally wasnt expecting a 2 tier test system ever to be needed and I dont feel it’s the best way of revitalising the format (if it needs it). I like the idea of underdog having the opportunity to beat Giant. I also feel as a British person, that my fellow multinational heritage friends deserve the opportunity to go to Lords and watch their family national team play against England. Even if unfortunately it is just a one off test match and a few ODI matches. It also may inspire them to play in the garden or join a local club.
IMO there are far more exciting ways of using the 5 day format. A Test World Cup for starters?
2 finalists wouldve played 7 matches in total like usual.
In county cricket I remember the days of Lara’s 501 and Alan Donald playing for Warks. It was very inspiring. As youngsters we all assumed county cricket would follow the premier league football format of unlimited overseas players.

A fantasy cricket league has boomed T20, I’m sure it could do the same for 5 day format too. Especially as players are now specialists and cant suit both formats apparently.

Every country is a couple of genius youngsters breaking through and leading them to top team in the world.
Cricket is hundreds of years old. I still believe every team can have its turn dominating eg WIndies, Afghan.

It is a terrible idea.

If they have to do something then split the 12 test playing nations in to 2 seeded divisions of equal standing, then those countries play each other over a 2 year period then the top 2 teams in each division play a series for the right to play in a test champo final.
Additional series can be scheduled if necessary... But this way you push the teams to win games.

There can be a division below for the associate top teams to get promoted to test status too.

I don't see how the tier two would be financially viable for those countries not playing India, England or Australia. It is a struggle financially for many of the test playing nations to continue under the current model. If this proposal did go ahead, I can't see much appetite for those nations who lose money on test cricket to continue with it

It would need a more centralised body, and better distribution of the funds, something that doesn't seem to be high on many peoples to do lists.

Revenue is one aspect. Another aspect is player workload. Top teams are struggling to manage player workload due to franchise cricket. Only way to keep their best from getting injured or over worked is to play only a select teams.

Cricket boards and ICC have not addressed (or even acknowledged) the work load problem yet! Star players affect viewership numbers. All boards should be encouraged to have separate, format based, teams so that you don't have white balls batsmen struggling in Test conditions. Test match over in 3-4 days with a result? Unreal.

Problem is franchise cricket. It is made for entertainment and TV viewership. It is ugly. It has lowered cricket standards. It also makes respective boards tons of money.

No, it seems this looks like a move to shift even more of crickets revenue to those who already have the most which looks pretty damaging to the future of test match cricket in many countries

Does nobody at the ICC understand that more frequent games between the big 3 will just water them games down and make them less special?

Like saying “oh the superbowl is popular, let’s have 17 of them a year”.

Vince and Duckett were both in the top 4 of the Bash run charts at my last glance. Although some big scores yesterday may have overtaken them. Cant help but feel we never saw the best of James Vince in an England shirt.
