LV Mallet alternatives?
« on: February 26, 2025, 12:38:50 AM »

Hey fellas,

Budget's a little tight at the moment, so fascinated to find out if people are using alternatives to the LV mallet.

I'm aware of the GN deluxe mallet, but I'm on the hunt for something heavier?

I know a mate who just strapped ankle weights around his mallet head for the heavier weight, but not sure if that's actually helping expedite the knock in process that much quicker.

Cheers.

I'm almost certain that's not helping. Have you looked at the cheaper alternatives that the guy who makes LV mallets offers? Still very dense wood, just not quite LV, and will knock your bat in faster than a standard mallet.

Question before buying would be - how many bats do you intend on knocking in per year?

Do you often ask ‘how many times do I intend to use this bat?’ 😁

Touche - though bats are to be admired too.  ;)

LV mallets are heavy but require careful application to the bat face or you risk damaging the bat. They are also very expensive and hard to find. Because of these prohibitive factors, I chose never to buy/use an LV mallet.

Have you looked into machine knocking? I had some bats machine knocked and that process eliminated the unnecessary time investment for me.  Focus on skills, practice sessions, and cardio/strength conditioning. Don't waste time on bat knocking. Keep things simple.

If you must, this GN mallet is as good as any:

Considering this is a limited edition that comes with a stand and everything, it will probably be much more expensive than usual

I don't think you can get any more LV mallets. There are shortages of LV. You can query Les at Elviar's shed to see if Leadwood mallets can be made up.

Now I’m not in the industry I don’t do anywhere near as much knocking in.

I’ve got a 1.2kg Lignum mallet from Les at Elviar. Designed to outlast both him and me was how he put it when we chatted about it.

Lately I’ve been thinking that I’d like to find it an appropriate home where it will get used as intended. Given its provenance, supposed rarity now, and the fact it cost me a pretty penny, I would be looking for top end money.

Not overly attractive from a buyers perspective I know but just a heads up that something might be coming up for sale soon.
