This has probably been done before but I couldn't find a topic on it using search so I've created one.

I bought some Woodworm Premier pads from Tom that he had brand new - presumably for research purposes. My previous pads were Morrants and were ambidextrous as a result I forgot to consider whether I wanted the straps to do up inwards or outwards. I always used to wear the Morrants so the straps were pointing out. The Woodworms do up inwards, fortunately they fit well and so don't have any extra that might rub as I run.

I know there are two sides to the which direction should the straps do up debate:

a) Reason for Inwards - the old straps on pads with metal buckles when clipped by the ball would sound very similar to an edge. Therefore to avoid being out caught behind wrongly straps should point in. This isn't so important any more though.

b) Reason for Outwards - if you have any extra when you run, the two are likely to rub together (potentially tripping you up) so people do them outwards to avoid this.

Just curious as to what other's views are on this. Is it important to you when choosing new pads? Why do you prefer one way to the other or aren't you fussed? Why don't manufacturers make two different versions (one that does up inwards and one outwards? The answer to that is obvious cost but still it could be a new unique selling point.

I have never heard of reason b) before. For me buckles should always be on the outside, for the reason you outline in a) you want the excess strap hidded, it isn't about the buckle. Because pads are held inplace with velcro, it is unlikely that they will come undone and trip you up.

newbery sps' have more padding one of the pads, i assume for the front leg, so that makes the buckles on the outside.

I have always worn them with the excess strap pointing out, but no with my RP pads being different widths having to have the excess strap point in. Luckily the Velcro is very good

I always have the excess velcro on the outside as there is so much with my weedy legs that the velcro hits eachother when running, very annoying.

I've never heard of pads being made with a left and right leg combo so odd that 2 pairs exist on the forum!!!

It makes no odd's which way the straps face, personal preference only.

I think top of the range Kooks have 9 canes on the lead leg.

The Aero ones are pretty prastically different for each leg.

Yeah the kook ones have extra cane and extra big flap on the lead leg, as did my old gn powerbow tests. And then obviously there is aero's!

I strap inwards (most of the time because my favourite player does lol) so I make sure its nice and tight. So in result the strap is long so I bend it and apply it. But sometimes when I run they hit each other and it gets loose.

my lead leg RP pad has 9 cane and the other has 7, the 9 cane pad has the big wing also

My brothers CA pads have 9 canes on both pads and both pads are same. I mean it doesn't matter which one you wear

too be honest, i would rather buy 2 pairs of ricky ponting pads and pair the 2 wide ones up to use and sell 2 thinner ones.

Further to this (sorry to drag up an older topic) but I have seen a number of players (in club cricket) recently wearing their pads on the wrong leg - this sound barking but stay with me.

As mentioned above the front pad in some models of pads have extra protection. For example the Kook Kahuna 1000 and Kook Ice 850 as well as the GN Nitro pads see:




In each case the buckle is designed to be on the outside of the pad - it also means that if you have one of these models you look a bit of a muppet when you wear them on the wrong way around (see Angelo Matthews...)


the thing is when I have mentioned to opposition batsmen that their pads are one the wrong leg, I have been looked at with a totally blank face... so the moral of the story is either: I am nut case or if you spend loads of cash on nice kit, do wear it properly, you wouldn't wear shoes on the wrong foot would you...!! These pads have extra protection to help you, not to get in the way and help the bowling side get you out LBW - as happend to a poor hapless individual we were playing against this weekend.
Oh and Matthews was out LBW this morning too...
