The First Spliceless Bat??? The Newbery Hi-Tech!!
« on: April 18, 2010, 08:21:52 PM »

Right ladies and gents, a little bit of cricket bat history (or Norb porn!)
Some people may not care (tough!). I thought i would put this up for people to see what i think may be amongst the very first bats made with no splice, a real Jon newbery bit of innovation!!!!
I managed to pick this bat up with original leather cover - which is always a nice touch!
The Hi-Tech bat is spliceless and must be at least 15 years old, but possibly up to 33 years old - how do i know this, well it's a mike gatting 5 star - so it must have come out somewhere through his cricketing days!
Anyway - just thought i would post this up here as it's a pretty unique bat and considering all the hype about 'spliceless' bats nowadays, i thought wouldnt it be nice to see one of the originals! The bat, whilst a bit dirty looking, has 10 straight grains and still hits the mallet nicely!
Good work Mr.Newbery - by the way, the shape of the bat is still popular today (you can see mr.newbery has influenced the likes of tim keeley and julian millichamp - and rightly so!)
Enjoy the pics and a little bit of bat history!

C'mon Dom, roll up the grip and unwind the binding.

Dom, I'd suggest older than 15 years. Gatting used GM for the latter part of his career.

Bat was made between 1984-1985 - confirmation from Talisman via mr.keeley - so 25-26 years young this year, the bats older than i am for gods sake!
Pics of the handle to follow.....

Dont want to take the grip off as it looks like the original - have to keep it on for posterity's sake!
It was an early version of the C6 handle - similar principle i believe, but this had a rubber outer-layer, around a cane (i assume it's cane) rod that goes into the blade. Im guessing the white tape is purely so that a grip would grip to the handle.

So it is spliceless in the same way the C6+ is, the hole in the top of the blade with the handle glueing into this.

Liam - i believe the principal would be the same, though the materials, quality and performance has improved since the time of this bat (at least i would like to think so anyway!)
Got it a car boot sale for £2 - thats one of the most satisfying things about it!

I think we should start a campaign to get Newbery to do a limited edition run of bats with old school stickers
