Batting Problems!

Hi guys, I need some help with some aspects of my batting!

Having had a very good start to the season (103* and 51*) I find myself struggling, the last 3 games in a row I have been bowled on straight balls that I'm trying to sort of jab/clip through midwicket. I take guard at middle and anything near my legs I find myself trying to squirt to the legside, however this is making me succeptible to the balls on or around leg stump.
Because of my recent failures at the crease I have also lost a lot of confidence, which is making scoring tricky!

Does anyone have any tips or pointers on how I can A) Play straighter to the straight balls? and B) Gain confidence?

i do this!

take leg have a little trigger onto middle!

and in like your setup just before the bowler bowls....

hard to explain! i got taught it by our west indian who played for windies

erm bring your elbow out if you get me!! like straight in front of your eyes and this allows you to play in the V more!! really is hard to explain

and if the ball is genuinely on the leg side drop your elbow which makes it easy to hit the ball squarer but if u keep your elbow up and straight you hit through midwicket if it genuinely on leg..

but on leg stump and on the stumps you will hit straight and off drives...

erm look at how some of the pros setup as a trigger just before with their elbow

and lean forward in your stance but dont fall over this allows you to come forward really quickly and also rock back!

hope this helps as its helped me quite a bit even tho i forgot to do the elbow thing yday and got lbw trying to flick thru midwicket :(

Thanks a lot for the reply mate, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this  problem! And thanks for the advice about the elbow, will work hard on that in the nets.

u will find it hard to do it every ball and forget on some deliverys as i did yesterday just try and programme it into your head! and u will find that after batting for a while your elbow will ache! but it really does work! and allows you to drive the ball hard and on the up i find!

but lets say ur playin a (No Swearing Please) bowler whos slow forget the elbow thing and smash him!

Firstly, even if you have made three 0’s in a row, your seasons average must still be around 50. That is a fantastic place to be and the confidence from scoring a 100 will last for most of the season – it will all come flooding back to you when you get to about 25 next time you bat. I once got a run of three league 0’s in a row, but it only took one shot for the confidence to come back – ironically a punch through the leg side for 4...

Remember cricket is a great game, but also a great “leveller” – all the best players make low scores – just look at the trials of Cook and Strauss in the county championship this season. 

Looking more directly at your issue...you have had a great start to the season, but something has changed – are you doing anything different now to when you started the season? – When you score runs it is easy to get a little over confident and for little changes to creep into your batting. When I get over confident, I sometimes introduce a “trigger” into my batting and then get done LBW – trying something I shouldn’t.

If I were you, I would try to remember how you played in the first 50 of your hundred – especially think about those first 10 runs, usually somewhere in there will be a shot that got you going, remember how that felt. That will give you your base and all the confidence you need.

As for your problem with the flick to leg – the punch to mid on is a tough shot to play, but sounds like something for you to work on. I would do this by practicing only holding the bat in my top hand, then dropping/gently throwing and old/soft tennis ball about a yard in front of me and punching it into a net as if it is through the on side.  You can use this for practicing a lot of different shots depending where you drop the ball.

And as Aidy says – feeling the bat on ball in the nets is a wonderful way to get the confidence back.

after starting off with 100 and 50 its easy to think it is your right to score runs, its good to gain confidence but approach every innings as a new challenge and forget what has gone before, good or bad. no matter what happened last week, last month or last year you start on 0 every time and you have to apply yourself because no situation in cricket is ever exactly the same as the last game, grind it out, concentrate and have a cracking season

Looking at your description of the problem, the main thing I would suggest is to stand on leg instead of middle.  If your natural instinct is to first get on the front foot, this guard will discourage you from having to 'go around your front foot' to play through mid-wicket.  This will also make you less susceptible to balls on leg-stump.  Since, you are already standing on leg you will just be able to let the ball come to you and play it easily. 

As for gaining confidence, for me its always been a matter of one shot.  If I'm not in great form, and then all of a sudden I middle one to the boundary (or even for a single) it does wonders for my confidence.  Hit the nets,  start with some throw-downs.  Once you are middling those well, get people to bowl at you, and you'll be back to applying that confidence out in the middle in no time.
